snippet:  Los Angeles (United States) (AFP) - A plan to divide California into six separate US states is closer to making it on to a November ballot, with organizers gaining approval to collect signatures.

The seemingly far-fetched initiative, sponsored by Silicon Valley venture capitalist Tim Draper, claims "political representation of California's diverse population and economies has rendered the state nearly ungovernable."

=============

Alot of Californians on this board.  What are you guys thoughts on this?

I am in New England, a World away.    I live in Connecticut.  I kind of wish they would split it into 2 States, one being the Welfare portion, the other the portion of people who work.  However that would only give about 2% of its population to live in an area the size of Beverly Hills (without any of the luxury).

I don't come in here too often but saw this and had to laugh.

They have tried countless times to split into 2 and it hasn't worked. While 2 has some merit ("North" and "South" are very different), 6 sounds somewhat bigoted and prejudicial and would likely lead to much failure.

It is not so much not governable, as there are distinct geo-political differences. Water is a huge issue in that regard right now and is probably a fair bit how it is getting traction.

Better maybe we just buy the teabaggers and gun nuts a one way ticket to Texas and let them secede.

I don't think we'll be splitting for quite a long time if ever.

The areas that want to break off and have their own state are generally more rural, make less money and are subsidized by the larger cities/counties in California.  They feel dominated by big city interests over their own, and that's quite understandable.

Water rights for example: Los Angeles still has general lawn watering even though we talk about drought all the time.  We're actually desert area here so we import water from far, far away.  Originally the water use was predominantly for crops, but now lawns have replaced the cropland and we still use just as much water with nothing to show for it but lawn clippings???  I grew up farming, but our irrigation fell from the sky - don't have that luxury out here though, so we should be using water more wisely both in the city and on the farms.

Don't think the only destination for the "teabaggers and gun nuts" is Texas.  Indiana is a great place for them too as my dad will attest!  LOL

I thought this could be discussed without profanity.  Color me wrong.

Apparently the term "teabag" (as opposed to "tea bag") used as a verb as in "to teabag" is a reference to a sexual act (i recommend avoiding Google on this subject, especially the image search unless you have the explicit filter on :) ), and thus might be considered vulgar, although if you didn't know that you might not understand the objection to it. It is not considered one of the terms of profanity the moderators use on moderation of the forums, but maybe better avoided in general discourse.

Obviously the intent to use such a vulgar and profane term to degrade another human being due to their political views was explicit.  And as a long standing member of this community I am outraged that it is apparently condoned by the leadership of CG.

Topic reviewed, and will not be censored.

The "teabagger" comment (term popularized by Bill Maher to refer to Tea Party people) is, IMO, no different than the sweeping generalisation term used by OP regarding welfare people.

You discuss politics, expect some fire. The moderators have a tough enough job in our forums without constantly having to be the polite police. You'll need to grow a thicker skin.

Really Mark?    If you condone the vulgarness it shows alot about your character.  And just because I discuss politics does not represent my acceptance of such profanity.
