I am not sure if anyone has noticed this, Netphilosopher (or Steve) seems to be gone from the forum. All his posts were also removed. I tried to contact him just to ask what happened, but even his email is removed from the profile. Anyone knows where did he go or what happened?

I admire his spirit and enthusiasm in experimenting, and he did come out with a lot of useful contribution. It's really a shame and surely I will miss him and especially his long-winded but very detailed posts.

I asked the same question to one of the mods a couple of weeks ago via pm, and was told there were copyright issues - nothing more than that was offered and I didn't inquire further.  I kinda figured it's none of my business.  I miss his posts too.

Yes, his contributions were excellent and detailed. One of the most knowledgeable and useful contributors on here. I wish I had saved more of them.

Steve apparently received a SLAPP, and requested that all his posts be removed from CG, H-B and other coffee fora. Some follow-up discussion may be found here.

Yes, I miss him too. The moderators don't know anything more than you do. Maybe Mark Prince or Dan Kehn know more, but I doubt it.

If this is true, it's really too bad and does leaves a bad taste in my mouth too. I do not know much about patenting abstract formulas, but I am sure Steve did not try to copy the patented info nor benefit from whatever he posted. He may not even seen the actual formula himself and had just arrived at the conclusion naturally. It's just like there's only one way to get out of the door in a building - the second person who found the way out does not mean that he is copying the first person!

Anyhow, I am letting this go too, albeit with tinge of disappointment and sadness, since Steve himself obviously did not make too much of a fuss about it.

Hi John:

(1) In this context, what does "apparently" mean?
(2) Your Wikipedia link says, "The typical SLAPP plaintiff does not normally expect to win the lawsuit." Since you don't mention that you spoke with Steve about why he removed his posts, how did you determine there was a "plaintiff?"
(3) IF you determined there was a plaintiff, did you receive credible legal advice that this party did not have a winnable case?

(4) Similar question: how exactly did you come to this conclusion?

Hi Andy,

To be frank, you can't discount it may be the naive part of me wanting to believe that as well.

But these are my justification:
First, he has no benefit nor the motivation to copy it.
Second, what exactly is the patented information? It's pretty vague if you ask me and it's not made known to the public what exactly is patented. So how one intend to copy if he/she doesn't know what it is to begin with?
Third, I don't remember he owned a VST Mojo or whatever it is. Most of his works are non-related to that, even if he owned one.
Forth, he has gone quite deep into experimenting that he may as well come out with the same conclusion/formula that makes the most sense.
Fifth, is discussing the patent considered infringement? It's not 'copy' and far from it in my book. True, discussion, especially if one know exactly what that patented info is and sharing it, may lead to other people copying it. But the person initiated discussion about the patented info DID NOT COPY. It is the next person who is copying it intentionally, knowing it was patented. That is illegal. But in the first place, does Steve know what is the patented information? I highly doubt so..

It sounded like you know something about what happened?

I agree this was/is a shame. Steve isn't the only person affected, but his absence is the most keenly felt [by me, at least]. I've spoken to him (since I moderate another board) and Dan as well. The HB thread is on the right track based on what I know.
