A definite gross out:

Look at the picture.  My wife said where do you get that many crickets in NYC?  I said they are probably not crickets but cockroaches.

Definitely different fare Len, thanks!

I've seen many other food shows on the Food Network showing other countries (Asian, etc)  'street food' fare, & the protein percentage of these buggy foods is very high (I'll have to look it up)., & very nutritious. {:-D

I have seen Bourdain eat some crazy stuff.  I think instinctually when we see a piece of grilled me we say, "Dig right in".  But when it comes to eating bugs, worms, etc., our brains (at least mine) says, "Whoa boy, hold on a second here".  There has to be some reason for that.

1) It's not "instinctive."

2) We are socialized into a culture that does not "eat bugs."

So it's not instinctive for men to gravitate toward burning logs and grilling meat, and to swat flying insects off a succulent char broiled T-Bone on ones plate?  I beg to differ with you.

I think you got it the wrong way around.  I think that cultures that eat bugs have been the ones conditioned, or socialized as you put it, to eat them because there is basically nothing else to eat.  And people that eat bug stuff here in the U.S. do it because they want to feel "in" with their wack job peers.

I have to side with Len here. If G-d didn't want us to eat animals, why did he make them out of meat? Conversely, if G-d wanted us to eat bugs/insects, why didn't he make them out of meat?

I can't think of any guy I know that isn't attracted to building fires, explosions, etc, and the only ones I know who don't eat meat withhold because of religious reasons or because they've conditioned themselves to "live healthy". Heck even the hardcore Jews and Muslims have loopholes allowing them to eat "special" (Kosher and Halal Kosher) meat.

Ask any dentist, paleontologist or evolutionary biologist about the reasons our teeth are structured the way they are...they are designed for both tearing and mashing.  Homo sapien sapiens are omnivores by nature - not "condition".

I'm not going to get into 200 years of research in sociology, cultural anthropology, social psychology and developmental theory here. I'm just not. I'm dropping it.

I enjoy talking about coffee and espresso. That's why I'm here. I shouldn't have said anything. My apologies.
