Don't you get a "sour" outlook on the day from the lemonaid? Just wondering :D

Hey, if life is giving him lemons instead of coffee, I'd say he's doing a pretty good job of coping... :-D

It really is best to drink when your thirsty. The fad of "hydrating" (because drinking doesn't sound cool), seems to have travelled over to the UK from the US. People seem to have an unusual need to "hydrate" at every opportunity and believe it or not you can get ill from "hydrating" too much.

Me, I'm a simple bloke, if you drink a litre of water when your not really thirsty...maybe, just maybe, you are drinking too much?.....sorry I mean "hydrating".

Well to stay on point but on the exit side of getting enough fluid, you can tell if you are getting enough or if you need to drink more simply by the color of the....... fluid leaving your body. If there is a color to it, you are not drinking enough, when you are properly hydrated the color is clear. In basic training for the navy (other services may have it too but my son went through the navy) in front of the urnals, there is a color chart indicating if your exiting fluid is this color (match to chart) drink so much water NOW.

In order for your kidneys to operate properly and not be stressed, you need enough water and the color of the "water" leaving your body is a key indicator of your fluid level.

Sorry if this is a less than savory thing to think about but it is important none the less.

I gotta have my OJ first thing in the morning, apprx 75% OJ and 25% Cranberry.... THEN my coffee.

Hey Calblacksmith....  thanks for the hydration info---valuable to know. I've always been a big water drinker but never knew this or had it explained that way---simple is best and that was a great and simple explanation.

I wonder, how can a person drink that much of water in the morning.

Basically, it's a matter of getting used to it. Some of my patients suffer from cystinuria, a genetically inherited metabolic disorder which frequently causes kidney stones. In order to reduce stone formation those people have to drink up to six liters over the course of a day, even during the night. It's hard, especially at the beginning, but they usually get to it.

Depending on your daily activities and ambient temparature, two liters is usually enough for an otherwise healthy adult. However, if your body loses larger amounts of water by sweating (because of hard work, sports and/or heat) or during a case of diarrhea, for example, you'll have to supplement that and might have to drink two and a half, three liters or even more; e.g. a road bicycle racer drinks up to two liters per hours during a Tour de France stage.

From a medical point of view, there's no reason to force yourself to drink one liter of water for breakfast. Like DaveUK hinted, there's a medical condition called water intoxication (or dilutional hyponatremia), too.

I usually have a smoothie for breakfast and then a latte later in the morning. I do also enjoy a nice glass of water with cucumber. It's quite refreshing.
