I started roasting my own beans thanks to sweet marias and a popcorn popper.
At the same time, I bought my first espresso machine (a delonghi ec155) and a hario hand grinder.  This week, I got an unpressurized basket and cut off the bottom of the stock portafilter... and got my first shipment of SO beans.

Previously, I had been drinking coffee from a blade grinder and a moka pot -- my whole life, pretty much.

Big difference.  I've completely stopped adding milk.  I can't drink Starbuck's anymore.

In fact, I went down to a local boutique coffee shop and was completely underwhelmed by their beans, their roast and their technique.  Ugh.

Also, my coffee intake has significantly increased in the past month.  I'm doomed.

In a good way.

Hi all. I am a restaurant barista in Singapore (though originally from New Zealand). I have had to learn a lot of the skills and knowledge I have while on the job, but have had some great lessons at a place called Highlander Coffee. At home I use a Vibiemme HX Junior, and at work a fairly old [and IMO underperforming] Expobar.

Strangely enough I'm not a big coffee drinker; instead I would say that I'm a very particular drinker. Oh - I'm also a vegan, so I only use soy milk for my own coffees. What job doesn't come with a bit of moral quandary...?

I'm interested in learning everything I can in the hopes of opening my own vegan/dairy-free cafe. Thanks!

Hi, I am Richard from Lousiana. Thank you for allowing me to join your site. I grew up on strong Louisiana slow drip coffee. I fell in love with espresso on trips to Europe and recently was introduced to the wonderful coffees of central america on a recent mission trip to Nicaragua. I started home roasting after locating a supplier in New Orleans. I have many questions, few answers, but am eager to earn.

Hey everyone.

Joining up to get connected with the wider global coffee community. Currently I'm marketing and brand manager at Inca-fe, a commercial roastery based in Taranaki New Zealand. We roast Organic coffees from around the world - putting a smile on the faces of our coffee fans around NZ and Australia.

Had a great time at the Melbourne coffee expo in 2013 and looking forward to many more expos to come. Love the creativity and passion of this industry.
I grew up around hospitality and it's great to be giving back to the passionate and hard working people behind the counters.

Lover of the Macchiato.

Hello,

I am from the Netherlands.  I join this site because i look for some good advice from some nice people that know something about coffee.
I was on a few other (dutch) fora but that was a very unpleasant experience.  If you owned a Nespresso machine you basically were flamed and burned down to the ground for even mentioning the name Nespresso.    So I hope here I can find a bit more down to earth people were i can ask advice about espresso, cappuccino and buying a new machine without being laughed at for owning a Italian Moka (stove espresso pot) or a nespresso machine.  Not everybody spends thousands of dollars on machines.

So I hope i get a good time here on the forum.

My favourite coffee drink is cappuccino but to to caffeine intolerance I don't drink it so often, sometimes i use decaf espresso, sometimes real coffee.
My experiences with espresso and cappuccino so far are just with Italian moka express and a nespresso machine.
