I've always been kind off a coffee addict. I remember my parents used to make a big pot of drip coffee every day, a couple of times a day, so there was always coffee in the house. Eventually natural evolution came to order and I started drinking coffee as well. I think I was about 12 when I had my first cup. First with milk and sugar like every kid, but by the time I was 15 I had switched over to pure black goodness.

One day, we bought a Senseo machine, unaware of what good actually tasted like, I switched over to Senseo. But there came a time when I got curious for other kinds of coffee. I bought myself a French Press. Even though it was a pretty cheap one, and a lot of residue came out of it, I loved it. Turning back to what I now considered the embodiment of pure evil called Senseo was not an option.

I felt pitty for my parrents that they were stuck with that awfull liquid (eventhough they didn't know any better). We also had run into a couple of problems with our machines and we were on our 4th machine.. So for Christmas 2011, I bought them a full automatic espresso machine (Saeco Odeo Giro Plus). I know, it's not the way a true CoffeeGeek would've gone. But bear in mind, my parents are not the kind of people who like spend time making coffee, they're used to the press-a-button-there's-my-coffee routine. And compared to the Senseo, I considered the full automatic the lesser of 2 evils.

Sadly, it wasn't before long that they realised quality coffee wasn't all that cheap, compared to what they were used to. Pretty seen, the cheapest beans available were bought and again, I disliked the taste. I went looking for something better. A 1 cup brewing method, so I could make my own coffee like before. There was still the French Press (I had upgraded to a slightly better model), but there was a longing for more, the CoffeeGeek inside me had truly emerged.

Around january 2012 I discovered the AeroPress. I also found that one of the local coffeeshops had them, so I went over and gave it a try. I fell in love instantly. A pure clean flavor of coffee I was always longing for, without any muddy after taste! I immediately bought one to take home. I also became a regular customer for their freshly roasted beans.

Now every morning, I have my coffee making ritual as I like to call it. But of course, the inner Geek isn't satisfied yet (and I wonder if it will ever be). I'm using a blade grinder and have been wondering for a while now, what the big difference with a burr grinder would be. So I ordered myself one this weekend (I'm writing this on may 7th 2012) and it should arrive in a couple of days. If nothing else, it will at least make life a bit easier, clean-up wise.

Looking at the future there are still things I want to try out. Perhaps a Coava Disk for the AeroPress will be a soon to be made purchase. To see if I can taste a difference between paper and metal filters. I'm enchanted by latte art and am determined to one day master it (or at least slightly). I'm fascinated  by the fysics and visual aspect of syphon brewers. And of course, one day I will have to by myself a decent espresso machine (perhaps a MyPressi Twist in the mean time?) and maybe, just maybe, one day I'll have a fancy smancy Baratza Vario...

In the mean time I'm just glad I found CoffeeGeek. A place were I can learn something new about coffee, every single day. A place that broadens my horizon.
