Made it to Catalina yesterday - just in time too, it was 1 pm and they had a sign out saying they were closing at 2 pm! It was packed. Unfortunately they were running low on espresso beans themselves and couldn't sell me any. :( Oh well, I've been meaning to get better acquainted with my press pot & Aeropress... This is some definite motivation for learning how to homeroast, eh?
People across the street from my parents don't have power, and neither does my apartment. Who knows how long it'll be...

OK folks, here's alink to some good pics showing just a bit of the devastation from IKE - CLICK THIS
Death tolls as posted seem way out of line with what I would expect, maybe those will be revised as more information comes in. But based on the number of people who decided to ride out the storm in houses that were completely swept away with nary a trace (see pic 11) I would say we may never know the true toll....
Most of you probably cannot even imagine living without electricity for a day or two...we went a full week without. I have not pulled a shot since last Friday, so I am looking forward to tommorrow. My last roast date was September 6th and since IKE all we've had has been pourover drip coffee (water boiled on a gas stove and coffee ground with a PeDe manual grinder - and grateful for THAT).
Right now I am pleased as punch just to have LIGHTS, air conditioning, and internet again....not to mention a functional and warmed-up espresso machine!
This winter, I am getting a back-up generator installed :-)

Truer word have never been spoken and you didn't even mention lack of running water and sewer!!! Living on hurricane alley adds a perspective to life that most people will never experience. Glad to hear you and yours made it thru OK.

You will never regret it, think about buying a LP fueled model. We used many generators with my company and if you needed one that must start you had the crew take an LP powered unit.

Still no power at my house. It is estimated I will have it by next week. A tree ripped down the electrical box so I took the opportunity to upgrade our electrical service to 200 amp. Saved $1500 doing it myself and can easily run a 220 to the coffee bar.
I haven't had an espresso in almost 2 weeks. Dragged out the bunn for drip and have about 2 days left of home roast beans....partly due to the coffee loving host family we are staying with until power is back. Lost 2 lbs of Hopson gunslinger I had in the freezer...uugh. I cant bring the roasting stuff over. I need beans!

Jon, That will probably work - I appreciate the offer. Wife and kid will be out of town this weekend and I can do some traveling to Houston. I could haul up a bit of gear and have a espresso-fest. Maybe Shadowfax would like to join us as he now lives in Houston.
I need to stop by Fry's and get a 1 - 2 Terabyte backup system to make taking my files during the next evacuation much easier! I also am looking forward to scanning most of my documents and paperwork to take with me....such as insurance.
I kept hoping that the hurricane would have landed a la spaz or other goodie on my doorstep, but only treelimbs....
