A quick note of support, thoughts and prayers to the folks in the path of the Hurricane Ike. At this writing its bearing down on Texas heading head long towards Houston projected to make landfall tonight. For reference Ike is already bigger then Hurricane Katrina when it devastated the New Orleans area in 2005. To the many CG'ers down there I'm thinking about you today and hoping you are heading to a safer location. No one envy's what you're heading into, but your not alone. You have my thoughts and prayers, please get safe and stay safe.

Well that was quite an experience!
We live in NW Harris county, about 60 miles NorthWest of Galveston. We saw him coming, winds kicking up Friday afternoon and first bands reaching us Friday evening....
We left afterward, because it was hot and we had no power or water (I type this from a hotel room in Austin). Hopefully basic services can be restored soon....but for now we are grateful that our area wasn't hit nearly as hard as coastal counties.
Our prayers are with those who were directly in the path.

Jon I'm glad to hear that you and yours are safe. I can't imagine the things the area down there is seeing and what they will find in the aftermath. Thanks for the photos and video too.

Although 88% of Centerpoint Energy customers are still without power CATALINA COFFEE Co. is open for business and pulling shots. So, if there are any Houston area coffeegeek types still in town and looking for an espresso, that is the place to go.

Jon, Glad you are safe. We left Thursday for a meeting in Austin, which, of course, didn't happen on Friday. At least we had a hotel reservation for that night at La Quinta 290 & 35. We are now in Cedar Park, just north of Austin, with wife's relatives.
Lake Jackson is 15 miles from Surfside and has quite a bit of damage. Needless to say, it ain't gonna be pretty and easy getting services up. Hopefully Lake Jackson will get it back in 1 - 2 weeks. Flooding, I heard, was almost everywhere. We hope to be able to drive back on Monday to assess damage.
Being north of Austin, I check the CG Austin coffee show topics and couldn't find anything for north Austin or Cedar park (up 183). Any recommendations?
I sure hope my new Behmor and 40 lbs of coffee greens I received 10 days ago are fine at the house, not to mention the Andreja! My wife's relative "enjoy" folgers.....

I stayed with my parents, near I-45 South and Beltway 8. Not really a good place to be, but technically just outside the mandatory evac zone (we would've had to bug out if it had been a cat 4). Surprisingly little damage though, just our back fence came down and a few small tree limbs (and a ton of pecans - the squirrels'll be going hungry this year). We lost power for about 12 hours but got it back around noon yesterday and consider ourselves EXTREMELY lucky.
I'm SO glad to hear Catalina is open!!! I was worried about them, being so close to whatever Bayou that is along Allen Parkway. Also I'm making more espresso than usual for neighbors etc., so I'm gonna need some more beans soon. They're still telling people to keep off the roads though.

OK - we are back home now.... We still have no power (along with ~68% of Houston area residents) but at least water service has been restored Also, the boil water order has been rescinded so we can use tap water for cooking and showers.
