Hi,

My name is Linda - I love everything coffee and am a grass roots roaster using a popcorn popper and have even roasted over a campfire.

Although my experiences have been rustic I am also very appreciative of high end equipment. But, I find it fun to be as down to earth as I can. Ya never know when you might just find yourself deserted on an island with nothing but coffee berries, a metal hubcap and a fire. If it's me...I can still make a mean cup o'joe for my nakid native neighbors.

looking forward to buzzing with you all.

hello all, I'm glad to find this group.  I started out as a commercial coffee roaster back in 1986.  We do small batch roasting and have remained a rather small company (by choice growth can be painful) over the years. We roast in Colorado at an altitude of about 7150' (prime altitude for roasting).
... anyway, I'm in need a lead on a manual for an old Faema compact C85 machine. Or: Can anyone tell me how to program this machine?  It works great as a semi-automatic, but shot dosage is set for too much volume. Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Regards and thanks, Bob

Fellow Geeks,

I used to participate at the forums quite a while ago and then went into a period of inactivity (must not have been drinking the best coffee at the time).

I live in south suburban Chicagoland and have been enjoying coffee beverages since I could walk (nope, I'm not exaggerating; my father is of Turkish descent and he taught my brother and me how to cook Turkish coffee in an ibrik as soon as we could stand upright, much to the chagrin of my mother).

Any others here who love to use an ibrik often?  Would love to engage in some banter about cooking methods...

Oh, and I love to eat the grounds...anyone else here that geeky?  :)

It's all about the bean,

Dalla Lama

Welcome Dalla Lama!

I think it's very cool that you know about Turkish coffee -- it's a subject that is often overlooked here. For ex., I'm curious if it's true that you need to grind by hand to get the right fineness -- is that how you do it? You could start a thread on that -- and on choosing an ibrik (copper or brass). Hey, I could get into this, with a little encouragement!

Ciao,
Wayne

Hi,
my name is Rene. I have been using a Silvia and Rocky combo for the better part of 6 years. That combo has served me well. I have also recently installed a PID and traded in my older Rocky for a new one.

I have been lurking for a while reading up on what was new in the world of espresso machines and grinders.
I then found out you had regional forums so decided to join. I have already gathered quite of bit of useful info from coffeegeek including where to find fresh roasted beans in Ottawa/Gatineau.

Glad to be here but afraid the upgrade bug will hit anytime soon.

Hi Rene & all new members to date, welcome to the Coffeegeek forums! {;-)
Excellent on your Rancilio Miss Silvia & Rocky combination & installing a PID also. I love my setup too! Do you have an Auberins PID? You traded your old Rocky for a new Rocky you're saying, why didn't you just replace the burrs?

Yes, I've installed the Auberins PID.  I was surprised to see the negative posts on this unit. Mine works quite nicely with nice recovery time (always ready by the time I've refilled the portafilter) and steady SV. Hope I didn't buy trouble.

As for the Rocky, I went to Morala in Ottawa to get the burrs replaced and my wife saw the Doserless Stainless Steel Rocky (ours was the older white plastic doser model). She liked the looks of it and Morala took my old Rocky as trade-in.  So taking into account the trade in and the cost of the new burrs with install on the old Rocky, I got a brand new Rocky for not much more.

But sort of wished I would have stumbled onto this site before. I would probably have bought a Mazzer Mini (which seems to be the flavour of the day) instead and sold off my older Rocky. But the Rocky has never failed me and I am exprerienced enough on the Silvia that I can pull consistent shots.  Not sure I would notice the difference taste wise. But like I said the upgraded bug is bound to hit. If that happens I will sell off both the Rocky and Silvia.
