Hope you enjoy the title; it’s a blast to play. Thus far I've got one or more stars on each race in the 50cc and 100cc classes. Now on to the brutal 150cc...
Some things to try if you haven't (don't know if this is your first MK or not):
Hold down the gas right as the number 2 is almost gone from the screen (this will give you a mini speed boost off the line). But time it right or you'll spin out and loose valuable time!
When going off of ramps do a trick (shake the Wheel, or use the d-pad on the Gamecube controller, or shake the Wiimote if using the Wiimote and Nunchuk attachment) doing this will give you a speed boost when you land.
Draft as much as you can, simply tail an opponent and let the blue hue build up for a few seconds until you rocket past your opponent.
Weapons can be launched either ahead of you or tailed then dropped behind you. This can be a vital defense. When using the wheel use the arrow pad (up or down) to use weapons. With the Wiimote I believe it’s the B button and analog stick and the Camecube controller it’s the L shoulder button and analog stick.
Patience. Yeah a part of MK is luck.
Notice kart stats they are all different and finding one that suits your particular driving style/abilities can make a big difference.
I'm trying to add you to my system but don't know how to use this information. The number you give and every variant I could think off isn't working.
I've been all over wii.com and don't see how I can use the number above on my Wii to add you to my address book (sigh, what am I missing here)?
From Wii.com:
Important Notes about PC and cell phone email addresses:
* To communicate with someone using a PC or cell phone, they must "reply" to an email that is sent from your Wii console once you enter their email address in your Address Book. * If you are entering a cell phone's email address, it must be the phone's full email address with a "@". For example, 5555555@phonecompany.com. If the owner of the cell phone is not sure if their phone has an email address, they will need to contact their cell phone service provider for more information. * You may want to inform the person you are adding to your Address Book that they will receive an email from your Wii console with an address that begins with a "w" and contains 16 digits. It will be from "@wii.com" (for example: w1234567891234567@wii.com). * You will not be able to send photos from your Wii console to the PC/cell phone user.
Use the virtual keyboard to enter the email address and nickname for the friend.
The way I read this is that I need to reply to an email that your Wii sends to my email, or I need your Wii Console number to add you to my address book. I don't think I can directly use the number you gave me rather I have to respond to a system-generated email with that number in it.

Ok Jon I added your email from CG to my Wii, I don't know if it sent anything to you (I didn't see a message saying it sent anything to you). Anyways take a look and see if it arrives. I've never added anyone via email before...

No free time, but I've managed to try the Mario Kart WFC connection a bit (and feel guilty every time I do so because I should be working), and things are good and bad.
The Good - I'm in the middle of the pack on my time trials with people in my region - not as bad as I thought I was in driving skillz.
The Bad - my VR points in races is down to 4000!!! I keep losing! I notice that the lower your VR goes, the less points you lose for coming in like 10th, and you actually get some points back if you finish 7th or higher. I finished 4th in one race and got over 100 points, where the 1rst place finisher (with something like 8000 VR points) only got 30 or so.
