I have been lurker on this site for quite some time. I got the espresso bug back in college. Due to deficiency of acetaldehyde dehydrogenase, I can not enjoy alcohol like my college friends so espresso became my "vice."
I remember back in ~1991 when Starbucks offered a decent cup of espresso. The baristas there were knowledgeable and stores had great informational pamphlets (I still have some of them).
Fast forward 2006 and finally I enough disposable income for a decent machine. Unfortunately the boss (i.e. wife) was not willing to take the effort to learn a heat exchanger; or for that matter willing to grind whole beans. Thus I had to settle on a superautomatic.
Now I have gotten here to actually grind her own beans. Next step is dual boiler semiautomatic. It seems from reading this site and homebarista.com that dual boilers make temperature surfing unnecessary. I am looking at Expobar Brewtus II vs. La Spaziale Vivaldi II. As the Borg would say...resistance is futile. Then again the Borg never met my wife.

Hi I'm a coffee tragic from downunder (Australia), I have got a lot of information from Coffeegeek reviews etc so I decided to get a coffee perspective from the USA and other parts of the world and join your forum. I started my coffee journey many years ago on instant, then buying supermarket bricks and drip filters and plungers, then a Saeco Via Venezia still using supermarket coffee, then a Sunbeam EM450 grinder which opened up a whole new world having freshly ground beans. I joined Coffeesnobs a popular Aussie forum and very soon after upgraditis hit me and I purchased a Silvia followed by a Rocky and my coffee went into a new era. I read about home roasting so got the popper out of cupboard and bought some green beans and produced my first roast, very dark, very oily and tasted like charcoal but hey it was my creation, I soon sorted out popper roasting until I did one too many roasts in succession and killed it. I then got into Corretto (heatgun/breadmaker/thermocouple etc) roasting, this enabled me to do larger roasts with full control of roast profile and able to record the profile for repeat roasts. I have got involved in the local coffee scene and meet with fellow roasters to compare notes and coffee experiences.....the learning curve has been rapid and I'm sure that I have only scratched the surface of coffee knowledge.

Hi There!
My name is Shane and I hail from Fremantle, Perth, Western Australia. The most isolated city in the world it feels like sometimes. I just moved here from Sydney, Australia and the change in coffee quality is amazing. The standard is much lower.
I have recently taken on a position as a Barista Trainer after spending 9 years actively working as a Barista in Sydney's CBD. My last position I was outputting approx 45-50kgs per 5-day working week.
I love great coffee and am here to surf the forums and to see what's going on. Hopefully I can be of assistance to anyone with questions or problems.

Hello,
My name is Christy & I am a NEWBIE!! I love coffee & I am trying to learn to make good espresso. Coffee seems alot like wine in that your taste evolves. I started out drinking lattes & mochas now I am drinking cappucinos & trying to get espresso shots that are decent. I have alot of questions but I am unsure of where or how to post or ask a new question.

Good to have you in sunny WA Shane, I'm sure your coffee experience will enhance the growth of the Perth coffee scene, which is starting to get some top cafes around the city block--Epic, Zecca, Tiger Tiger, Velvet, Cafe 54, Mooba and more........................

I'm a barista at The Third Place in Stillwater, OK. I'm constantly trying to learn as much as I can about coffee, and this has been a very helpful resource. I'm hoping that I can add something to the community, but I guess it's more likely I'll be just sponging off of most of you. Looking forward to learning from you all!

This is a repost as I had posted in the wrong forum (whoops!) ;)
Hello everyone,
I am new to the forums and wanted to introduce myself.
I just started home roasting with my Poppery II and have decided I can't go back to the ol' store bought. I only have about 4# of roast experience right now but hey, we all start somewhere. I have 10# (SM's 5# Guatemala Antigua & 5# Brazilian Coromandel) on the way so I hope to get a bit more experience under my belt by the end of next week :)
I buy through Sweet Maria's as I have yet to find a place with a better selection, price, and available information.
I will probably troll quite a bit as I am still learning about the roasting process, verbiage, equipment, and origin characters. I hope you don't mind questions ;)
I'm originally from WA State, now living in Eastern TX, 25 and getting married next month to a beautiful young woman who has quite the appreciation for coffee as well.
