I found this forum when I was looking for online directions on making Turkish coffee a month or so ago, and since then I have been thinking that I'd like to join a forum, so why not a coffee one?
I have been drinking coffee since a year or two ago, but I haven't ever really gotten into making my own. After expressing an interest in latte art, my dad told me that he would get me a lever-pump espresso machine so I could experiment, and I figured I should probably start reading up. I have a keen interest in learning to make coffee drinks of all kinds, and I'd LOVE to get a job as a barista when I turn sixteen. :)

This journey never ends from Yuban to a Gaggia.
My names Steve and heres my story. I started on Yuban thirty years ago and was happy. After a couple of years of that, I one day ventured into a small shop that sold cosmetic stuff and in the back they also sold imported roasted beans from all over. I would buy those beans and grind them with a blade grinder and use a Melita carafe and the cone shaped plastic filter holder and pour in the hot water. I liked it and that went on for years. I then found Santa Cruz Roasting Coffee in Santa Cruz California and bought almost every bean they sell.Sometimes at night a girl I got to know would let me in and I would watch her roast the beans and we would talk about coffee. That carried me into the Bunn years which went on for another long time. The third kind of phase came when I over the last five years started ordering coffees from all over the world online and found UPS could deliver some great beans while I sat at home. All the time during these changes in my coffee experience I was always going to coffee shops and having Lattes and the like. It was three years ago that I bought a Kitchen Aid Pro grinder and a Capresso MT 500 and quite frankly they still just work day in and day out to bring me some fairly good coffee. I think back over the whole time and I remember distinctly what I call the switch to the darker roasted coffee,I mean there was always Full City even way back then and Santa Cruz Roasting Company had the Heart of Darkness ( probably still does) and how to me it interfered with the taste of the bean. To me the one thing I really enjoyed in the coffee world was the many different tastes that all the coffee from different regions presented. A medium roasted Sumatran or Costa Rican has such a genuine earthy flavor I just dont want it cloaked in a burned taste. Ive kind of gotten used to Peets and Starbucks having that taste yet Im not convinced it is the best way to deliver a roasted bean yet,at times it fits my personal palate.I still like ordering coffee online and Paradise Roasters sends there stuff to me within 3 days after roasting in a nice vacuum bag. The online coffee ordering has gotten me some great Jamaican Blue Mountain and Kona which makes a great coffee. I only had one really weird buying experience and it was when I ordered 5 lbs of Costa Rican and a month later it still hadnt arrived so I had to call and threaten to report them to the Costa Rican coffee Better Business Bureau...yeah they have one. Seems the coffee was sitting at the airport and because a family dispute had arisen, one of the brothers just bailed out and I had no coffee. I finally got it though but it took a lot of work. About six months ago I was talking to my Pastor and he is a true coffee guy and he mentioned espresso. I asked a lot of questions and finally after awhile jumped in,only problem is I bought the wrong machine ( you can see my review) and it just wasn't cutting it. I didn't know a pressurized porta filter from a postage stamp and I blew it. I agonized over taking something back for a week then did it and the people who ran that store where so awesome,NO GUILT-YOUR NOT HAPPY AND WE WILL TAKE IT BACK...wow! So I read around on this site and figured out that at least for me it was either a Gaggia or a Rancillio Silvia.It really could have been either one but when I read the Gaggia peoples reviews they just seemed happier. I wanted happier especially after the first mistake. I got a Classic and even though its being discontinued for the Baby, I still love it . It looks like a espresso machine and it works like one to,I am on day two and having a blast. I think Mrs Santa is bringing me an MDF grinder so I will be ready to launch into this journey and like anything else Im sure I will make mistakes but at least Im going forward. So Im ready to put down that 135 PSI onto the beans and bring out the flavors often never noticed in just regular coffee. I know its about the golden rule and the four M's (Miscela,Macinadosatore,Macchina espresso and Mano dell'operatore), I have learned so much from this website that its unbelievable. Would I ever consider a upgrade to a high priced machine,yeah maybe someday,which one...it would have to be a Quickmill. But I read about all these machines and I really wonder if some old timer in Italy could bring out his hand pulled lever machine and just burry a guy on a 2000 dollar espresso maker. I got to find that balance and for now the Classic seems so adequate. But then again I once thought a Melita carafe and hot water with fresh chopped beans were the cats meow. I like the journey although getting there is fun too. Thanks for all your help.

I am not really new to CoffeeGeek but am new to posting here. I am a partner in a couple of companies; one that have sold the refurbished La Marzocco Linea espresso machines and Mazzer grinders for the last few years and another that recently started to distributing La Marzocco and Thermoplan espresso machines here in Seattle. Yes, for all of you true coffee geeks out there, this is not a typo. We will be distributing the Thermoplan Black and White 2 in the Pacific NW in 2008.
My own interest in coffee began in the early 90's when I opened my first espresso cart in York, PA... appropriately named, Espresso Express. Shortly therafter my current business partner, Joel Moll, and I opened a kiosk and store in the Camp Hill Shopping Mall called North Atlantic Coffee Company. We made a good run of the business well before Starbucks ventured east and had a very loyal following in the Harrisburg area for a number of years. Hi everyone, my name is Moe, I am a business owner in Arizona. I own three sub shops and I am now in the process of purchasing a business that has went out of business. I want to remodel the shop a little to make it into a cafe. The problem is I don't know anything about coffee. I just drink coffee once in a while but don't know what it is and what is in it. I need A LOT OF HELP. I open in Feb. 29th of 2008, just two months away. I need help choosing the right equipment and need some help in making good coffee. I don't even know where to buy my coffee from. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP... I have never been to coffee geek until I decided to build a cafe from scratch.

Utterly new to CoffeeGeek but not at all new to coffee. The name's Ben and I am a Kiwi living in Singapore. As has been documented already, its a hard task to get decent espresso here and I am consequently drinking more instant (and S'bucks, McCafe) than I would care to admit :(
So, there you ahve it. I am now doing my research on the kit and looking to buy a decent setup for my home here to satiate the beast. Will be some combination of economy, ease of use and function. This will be my first purchase of real espresso equipment (I have had ibrik and stove-top moka), so I think i better keep it a bit simple for a while. My father has a Faema E61 Rocket at his home in NZ (Wellington), which kinda inspired me somewhat when i was back there recently for a vacation with my wife and young boys.
OK, back to my quest! Thanks to one and all for the posts and resoruces, has been a great help so far!

Hello. I have been using CG for a while as a resource for my coffee addiction. I started off with a Technivorm Moccamaster CD and a Gaggia Carezza about a year ago. I still use TV occasionally but mostly use Chemex for day to day. I sold my Carezza and just purchased a Rancilio S20 Tecna DE. I know it's crazy for home use but I want to open a shop someday. I use a Gaggia MDF grinder which I hope to upgrade soon. Man is this a never ending money pit! I have a Freshroast plus I have been using for over a year and just purchased a Behmor. I am selling coffee locally to friends and family and hope to one day have a commercial roaster in my shop. I want to eventually quit my job and live coffee full time. I love it!

New guy here. I am a new coffee/espresso machine repair tech coming from a background of service plumbing. I'm not a coffee drinker. In fact, I can't stand it. Please don't throw stones at me. :) My wife loves it though so I make sure I get her fix everyweek. I am training to take over as service manager when the current manager retires.
