No commercial interest:not expecting anything free; usual disclaimers.

Well.  I had an interesting coffee experience this week, twice!.  Walking across the small park in Post office square in downtown Boston, I saw a new cafe (well new to me).  I had to stop in.  HMMMM a huge Anfim on the counter, a Major on backup and a la Marzocco three group ( Edit: It's a two group! OK, my eyes were dazzled with beauty and tremulous anticipation.) looking very clean next to them, looks very promising!  Yes I did chat with the Barista a bit, (Dylan from Portland OR) and he proceeded to pour one of the five best espresso shots I have ever had, (the other commercial one from Diesel) the others made by amateurs. Fantastic color and uniformity it caught the citrus notes from George Howell's Terroir (Daterra?I will edit tomorrow) perfectly. As I had already told him I tend to prefer chocolate notes more than aromatics I do not know if he tweaked his style but it did full justice the the coffee as no Boston area shop has ever done for me with Terroir. good citrus on the front end, better body and mouth feel than I have ever had from it, a bit of apricot and in the end as it started to cool more chocolate with a bit of molasses touch to it, but not sulphurously overdone; fantastically complex.

So I went back today.

Met the owner, Jared, who has plenty of love and vigor and is trying to do the right things with espresso and food.  He made my shot today.  Decidedly less sweet than Dylan's with more pronounced citrus.  Another beautiful interpretation, well done, but different. Like a Picasso to Dylan's Monet

Thanks to Jared, Dylan and the rest of the friendly crew!  A much-needed and very welcome addition to downtown Boston coffee culture, in the heart of the business district.  I will be there again; very soon, and often.

A new shop that does justice to Terroir beans? Sounds fantastic!

Great post about SIP. I don't often visit that part of town, but now I have a reason to go. Thanks again.

I just sent you an email- feel free to get in touch.  You can also google "post office square" with Boston and come up with the map.  State street MBTA stop is close. Corner of Congress and Franklin Streets.

Simon’s (Porter Square on the red line) is definitely worth trying, and that shop is about a mile from Diesel (Davis Square on the red line).  If you eat meat (or pecan pie) Redbones is near both of them.  Simon's brews Terroir and other greats;  I almost died from pleasure at Diesel from an unrepeatable (so far, but we keep trying ;-) ) shot of Intelligentsia's Black Cat ; consistanlty good quality).  Some knock Redbones and say that they oversmoke their meat (rendering out too much fat) but I love them and they do not use a Jenn-Air.

The Atomic Cafe in Beverly if your journeys take you to the North Shore.  I used to go through Beverly every day in the summer but I have not been there since Atomic opened,  Very well regarded though.  I have heard of Flat Black in Ashmont station, not been there yet Upcoming Jam there soon.

With Terroir in Acton MA, the Atomic Cafe in Beverly, Karma Coffee in Sudbury I am definitely seeing the quality local roasters coming around, and it's nice to see a few shops that strive to extract nectar.  If breaks my heart to see month old bags of this stuff at high prices in the local yup marts.

BTW
If you are a sushi freak and you need a truly world class fix it's Oga's in Natick (Yes...., in the strip mall next to the Blockbuster.  I was skeptical too but I love them and so does the New York Times)  Major chef, this guy is a consultant to some of the trendier Boston Sushi spots. (Sushi and tequila? one shot and you cannot taste much) Have you ever had Otoro? Rarely in season, worth checking.  Oga's consistently has the best yellowtail in the Boston area.  (I've been a sushi freak since 1977.)
