Do you often hear that from Portlanders, or anyone else outside of Stumptownland? ;)

Those of us fortunate to live in cities imbibed with great espresso from varied sources (eg, Seattle, Vancouver, sorta Portland (because they don't have varied sources), burroughs of NYC, Sydney, Melbourne, Copenhagen, Oslo, etc etc) will probably say their city is the best city.

But the real answer is, there's no one "greater than the rest" coffee city. There's many you could go to, and on any given day, god-shots of espresso are being poured. Some have better days than others.

I find it a bit weird that there's certain cities that like to make this proclaimation more than others do.

Yes, I've heard that from Portlanders.  I also tend to agree.

It's a lot better than Omaha, that's for sure.

I come from Portland where I learned to pull shots using Hairbender, so I am used to thinking of "Stumptownland" as the best city for coffee, though I was blown away when I first went to the Albina Press. I am moving to New York soon and am wondering if someone could clue me in to the places that I should check out.

Thanks!

i've always presumed it was somewhere in italy. like milan or something.

although i haven't been there yet, in my mind, i'd like to imagine that it's great there.

San Francisco has Blue Bottle, Ritual, and now 4 barrel  coffee. That has to put us up  in the  running for a top coffee city. When you get right down to it, good coffee is fairly easy, but great coffee is harder to find then a Republican in Berkeley, or San Francisco for that matter.

Ya I like Blue Bottle, but the prices are a little too high, don't you think?

I hate to feel like I'm overpaying for something.

Not that philz is much cheaper, but for some reason I feel that I get my money's worth there.

There are at least this many other locally roasted coffees as well, which I would prefer to name-check:

philz
graffeo
coffee to the people
jeremiahs pick
de la paz
the beanery
peets
cafe trieste
sweet marias

Gabe, please don't put Philz in the same category as Blue Bottle or Ritual. There really is no comparison at all. To be honest, I was a vendor that called on Phil when it was Gateway market, a convenience store. He really is a good guy, but, in my opinion ,   If he found something that would make more money, the coffee would be gone instantly.

Blue Bottle and Rituals prices are really not much different then many of the other good coffee places.

I can put philz into any category I want, ok? Lots of people go there and like it.

Not exactly sure what you're asserting about philz anyway, but sounds like slander.

Anyhow, I buy bags of coffee beans all the time, at many different places in SF.

But as for your blue bottle, there's at least this many unhappy customers posting reviews about their experience:

Point is, any place can be hit or miss.

That's why you need to know your city and try all the spots.

How about that graffeo, have you had tried it? Pretty good even though it hasn't been anointed as the most trendy place.

...

In conclusion, with respect to thread topic, SF has a few places that people like.

No way !!! could it best in the world, however.

You can go to Philz all you want, I couldn't care less. Nobody is telling you where to go, or where not to go. But Philz is, to put it bluntly, not very good. And to quote all the posts on yelp doesn't mean squat. There are lots of numbers and not much credibility on that web site.

You sound like your taking my criticism of Philz very personally. Is there a reason why?
