I often hear that PDX is the best coffee city in the world.

Since this is a city, not a store, I think I can endorse such a view.

I had the best coffee in my life when I was in pdx, (and it only cost a dollar!)

How many of you agree?

Portland is a Stumptown city.  From my limited time in Portland it seems that most of the shops that are serving spro well are serving Hairbender which is a great espresso. But there does not seem to be a great deal of variety.   I think that arguable Seattle is where you are going to find the some of the greatest variety of good espresso with a number of good local roasters and other shops serving beans from as far away as Intelligentsia in Chicago.

I know others may say that Vancouver Canada is another town that is doing it right.

I will put the vote in for Detroit MI to be one of the worst coffee areas in the country.  I have found only one good shop (Ugly Mug) in all of Eastern Michigan.

You sure that Detroit is the worst coffee city?

Maybe you should try coffee shops in Omaha first.

One thing that really pisses me off is that people running coffee shops here are only interested in making money, not at all serving quality coffee. (They want to charge as much as they can while delivering as little as possible.)

Baristas here are also money grubbing bunch, in fact, you'll get the worst service from independent coffee shops, and after that Starbucks, some of them actually get mad/snotty if you tip less than a dollar.)

For some reason, you get better service from Borders.

For the best latte, go to Olive Garden, don't go to coffee shops, especially independent coffee shops.

For the best coffee, go to Mcdonald.  Cheaper and better coffee, and no snotty service.

Now that is a sad state of affairs!

You can thank the marketing geeks for the high number of people trying to cash in on the coffee bonanza. They have convinced people that they can get rich from selling coffee, but failed to inform them that the quality of the product is also important. Personally, I believe that anyone going into a business needs to be passionate about what they are doing if they want to be successful! How else can you justify the long hours it takes to make it work?

Indeed.  People here care more about interior decoration, not the quality of coffee.

I've yet to see a single coffee shop here that doesn't use percolators to brew their coffee. (Can you imagine, Mcdonald use drip, while all these fancy coffee shops use percolators to brew their coffee!)

In fact, one coffeshop that went out of business, (Stage Right) didn't throw away their coffee until it was gone or somebody complained.   One time they gave me a coffee that was room temp.

MJ Java (one of the supposedly high end coffee shop in downtown), they don't even throw away their coffee at the end of the day, they simply "rebrew" it in the mornining till it's gone.

Oh, how I miss PDX!

Buckeye, AZ.......'cause thats where I roast mine....lol

After all, isn't that why we roast? Because we like fresh, great tasting coffee prepared with a bit of care and skill?

I may be a little biased, but it is tough to argue that Jamaica does not produce the best coffee in the world... Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee... With that said I would have to say any Jamaican cities would be the best,  Kingston, Ochi, Negril, Montego Bay!!!  If you really are into quality coffee you gotta try Jamaica coffee.

I had Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee as well.

Stumptown roast was smoother.

Vancouver and Victoria are the best in the world.  Their history of excellent coffee even predate starbucks in its early days.  Just check out WBC consistant winners. Or cafe's per capita.

Sorry ! I'm not sure if a place produces what some people think is the best coffee in the World that they make good coffee. Personally I find JBM coffee very overrated and way too expensive. They don't produce coffee in the US or in Italy but I'm sure for espresso and caffe latte (probably North America's favourite drink) the coffee is of top quality.
