Subject: The Real Deal for Boston

I live North of Boston (The North Shore).  Boston has never been known for good coffee. The north shore of Boston has long been a wasteland. I noted a cafe called the Atomic Cafe had opened a couple of years ago in nearby Beverly , but didn't think much of it.  They recently opened a second cafe in Marblehead, also called  the Atomic Cafe.  I went over to give it a try and to my surprise and amazement, it was the real deal.  I'm talking real coffee people, micro roasters, highly trained , knowlegeable baristas, great espresso, microfoam, latte art.  The whole package.  There is a nice selection of sandwiches and deserts as well.

I hustled over to Beverly (the mother ship) to talk to the roaster. We had a long and satisfying talk about his beans ( he is using Daterra for his single source espresso) and has a six bean multisource espresso (more northern Italian than southern roast).  As soon as my current bean supply runs out ( Flying Goat Espresso Ticino), I'm going to give his a try (Yes he has had some reviews by Coffee Review).  I've been in and out several times and nary a bad cup or bad shot. Latte Art is great to see done (I still can't get my microfoam to make Latte Art)  This is a coffee cafe the way it was meant to be.

Bostonians - actually worth the dreaded trip across the Tobin or through the Callahan- Beverly or Marblehead (worth a day trip to either anyway) - A major find for CG Bostonians!

So I was in Boston for the first time last April.  We were talking around near some historic areas.  First Public School and so forth.  Anyway I needed to use the restroom and conveniently there was a $*Bucks.  To my Surprise, they had a pair of Mazzer Grinders, and a 3 group La Marzocco.  I had a little chat with the Barista.  He was knowledgeable.  I figured what the hell, so I ordered a small double soy latte.  It really wasn't bad.  The shots were good.  The texture was good(which is difficult with Silk).  I really wish they didn't use vanilla flavored Silk.  Apart from that, I have nothing bad to say.

I lived in boston in the mid 80's and the coffee connection was and will always be the "Real Deal" all about coffee before the world was all about coffee. Unfortunately George Howell (owner) took the $$$$$$bait and sold out to The Big Green monster for many Greens....Bostons loss.....He's still in the game and very much still all about coffee.........

Indeed George Howell is still very much in the game with Terroir roasters, south of Boston. The issue for Bostonians (the north shore is still very much surburban Boston) has been where to get real coffee, prepared by knowlegeable barristas, in cafes owned by enthusiastic  owners, with fresh beans from high quality roasters or even better with a high quality roaster in house.  That has been a mightly scarce commodity in Boston and the environs. Starbucks was a step up from Duncan Doughnuts,  but a small step for those who valued good coffee. I think its fair to say that they were better before they mega exploded their corporation. The autos have brought their mean brew up a notch, but it is far from "the real deal".  I have previously had to travel to Cambridge to find a real espresso.  To find a high quality roaster/cafe in my own community was a very pleasant shock. To find one that cares enough about his roasts to submit to coffeereview.com's tough and critical review process was even more so. The fact that he can make a living doing that in the northern burbs says a bit about where Boston is headed in the coffee culture. People can tell the difference and similar to wine culture know bad, good and great when they taste it.

If you're north of Boston its worth giving these guys a try

PS - recently tried a pound of their decaf espresso blend, and it it was excellent (for decaf) - Plan to try of their Datterra SO when my current fav is done (Flying Goat Espresso Ticino)

Steve,

Thanks for the positive review of our cafe! It's always a pleasure to talk with others as passionate about coffee as we are. It's been a little while, and I'm terrible with faces (especially if we were chatting while I was roasting) so you'll have to introduce yourself next time you're in.

If you haven't yet picked up a bag of the Daterra Reserve yet, you can let me know when it is you want some and I'll make certain to have some put aside for you at either cafe (and certainly, we'll do this for anybody). Some weeks, we sell out of it entirely, so I'd like to make sure it's there for you when you want it. And especially, I'd appreciate any feedback you have on the roast.

I'm at school at Gordon College, and this is my favorite study spot off campus.  Not only is there good coffee (all the baristas pour latte art, or at least etch something in every espresso drink, and the drip brew is strong and fresh) but the environment is great if you like a bit of bustle to keep you from being distracted.  On top of that the owner, John, is a great guy who tried with me to get some good coffee into my school.  I'm not at all affiliated with these guys (but I'm not saying I wouldn't wanna be), and they run a great coffee shop.  (Try the Goat Chese and Pesto Panini!)

I missed this thread earlier but I would also like to endorse Atomic.  haven't visited the new location yet but Adam and John are cool guys who have been nice enough let me hang around a few times and talk shop, even once when I needed a big favor they came through.

On a personal level, I have a lot of respect for Adam and see a lot of potential in him.  Kinda like keeping tabs on rising stars if you will.  I heard they bought a new CoE brazil that might make quite a tasty espresso if they go that route.  have to drop in when the weather gets better.

Cheers,

Jaime

Atomic cafe just got a 94 for its Colombia Hato Viejo Cup of Excellence coffee from coffee review! (http://www.coffeereview.com/review.cfm?ID=1344) Haven't tried it yet but will.

Bye the bye, Even I notice that I'm starting to sound like a shill for Atomic Cafe.  I'm just really glad to have real roasters in my town and am letting people know it ( 'cause  I want them to stay).  Not related in any way to anybody there.

Hey!  I went to Gordon fall semester of 2004, maybe we've met.  Anyway, I'm def going to recommend this shop to my friends at Gordon.  I wish I could stop by, but I'm stuck in Indiana as of now.  It good to know that there are a few decent places around, I didn't find any when I was there.

My local cafe - Atomic cafe continues to grow and diversify it's roasts-It just got two new roasts reviewed which scored 95 and 93 on coffeereview.com!

Well worth the trip to the Beverly MA store  (Marblehead store can get the stuff but they are not as well stocked)

They need to get their web working to let others sample their stuff- It's very cool to have a "real " roaster locally.  Boston has very few committed and talented roasters.
