How is the pressurization done with your machine? A double walled filter basket? A plastic insertion in your portafilter? The later can usually be renoved easily in order to transform a pressurized PF into a regular one.

Hi Nobby,

It has a rubber insert and a spring-loaded needle valve.  I did have the portafilter completely apart to clean it.  I suppose removing the rubber part and the plastic spring assembly might do it.

It's not an elegant solution, but perhaps I might try this.

 Thanks.

Thanks Burner.  Yes I saw those.  They want about 60 bucks, which is a lot considering what it is.  I was hoping someone might have upgraded and had one they might want to sell.

I have one of the bottomless portafilters from SCG. I have the regular Starbucks Barista, and the bottomless PF has been awesome!! It really helps you dial in your shots by givin you instant feedback. If you're going to invest in a non-pressurized, go with that. If not, just remove the stuff in your regular PF and save the money.

That's my two cents.

Hey there!! I was just looking back through my posts and saw your question about portafilters for the Barista. What did you end up doing?? Did you just remove the pressurizing parts on your existing portafilter? Or did you buy a new one?

I just got a Rancilio Silvia off Craigslist so I'm selling my bottomless portafilter from my Barista setup.  If you're interested I could let you have it for $40 plus shipping. I know that's a lot but it's $20 off retail and I can probably sell it for $60 on eBay.

Either way I wanted to hear a follow up from you and see what you're doing now.

I just found some photos of when I did this mod, which made a world of difference with the machine. I wouldn't wait a minute to do this, so much easier to find a regular portafilter again in the future if you want one
