Hello,

Unfortunately, I believe this is the culprit in some functionality issues I've been having with my Oscar.  I developed a leak that wound up dripping onto the box, which now is causing problems.  If I wiggle the spades on it, sometimes the machine will work, but the machine still functions erratically, sometimes turning the pump on randomly, or shutting down etc.  Not unexpectedly, a new box is very pricey, so I thought I'd check here to see if anyone is parting an Oscar out.

Thanks in advance.

Leif

You should check with James Boyt (jboyt here on CG) who has a business in Seattle that repairs Gicar units. Might be quicker than trying to track down a used one. Certainly cheaper than buying a new one.

Thanks for the lead!  Unfortunately, sending off the unit would leave me without espresso for a while, which would not be good.  If I can't find a used one I will seriously consider this option.  I'll try to contact James to wee what the turnaround time is...

If you can't reach him through CG, here is some basic company info, including phone. He might even have a rebuilt Oscar Gicar in stock. Never had the occasion to use his services, but he seems like a good guy and also solid workman from reports I've heard from others.

You've also uncovered the reason why having a backup machine, even just an inexpensive SBDU or something, is a good idea. Never good to be without.

Well, yep, I agree! I used to keep Sylvia for that but now that I have the M32 up and running, once the ECM gets the service it needs, it will be the back up machine as well as Sylvia and the 2 gp Brazilia
....
you can't have too many espresso machines :D

Well, my tinkering seems to have done the trick, and  my Oscar seems to be functioning normally again.  I may pursue the reconditioned Gicar box route anyway, but now you guys have got me thinking about acquiring a backup machine.  This may be the impetus for getting into lever machines, as I've wanted to do for some time...just have to find one now!

Thanks for all the help and suggestions.  This forum is a great resource.

My Oscar had a bad controller and I purchased one at EspressoParts for $155 I think of was.  Best price I could find other than refurbished with James Boyt.  (hear good things about his work)

Levers are fun, my main machine is a La Pavoni with my Oscar as the backup.

UPDATE: I did wind up buying a box from James "Pat" Boyt, and the experience was a very good one.  Much cheaper than new, and he's a nice guy to boot.  For anyone else with the same problem I recommend trying this route first.
