Posted Tue Aug 20, 2013, 10:19pm Subject: SOLD: Mazzer Major with heavily modified Doser for single dosing
Time for me to make some room as Upgraditis hit me hard all at once. Would like to sell my Mazzer Major to an enthusiast. I will post pictures shortly but it's a refurbished Major. Condition I would rate 8 out of 10. The motor is bulletproof and I have had zero problems with the best and biggest flat burr grinder out there. Adjustment collar is precise and very easy to use. I single dose by dropping beans into the throat and placing a spare tamper on top of the chute. I do have the original large hopper but if a hopper is wanted i would recommend a new Mazzer Mini short hopper that can be bought for $17 (I can even buy this from Seattle Coffee Gear this weekend if needed).
What have I done to improve the machine? The exit chute has been wet sanded and polished to be considerably smoother than the original to help retain less grinds. The electrical cord has been shortened and relocated to come out from the bottom of the machine and the original hole filled prior to the repainting. This is much cleaner and I liked it a lot more as my steam wand was originally right beside the cord opening and also seem to go on for miles. The doser bottom has been sanded and polished so that its considerably smoother now. The doser vanes have been sanded and polished to have a pointed edge instead of a flat edge where the coffee ground use to lie on top of. The plastic doser window has been removed and a thin transparent film is now used (coffee grounds always got trapped behind the OE plastic window). Unnecessary doser parts have been removed (have all original parts to be included) and a perfect fit stainless funnel has been inverted and placed over the doser vanes to help eliminate trapped espresso grinds. Vanes also have the tape mod of course. Portafilter fork just removed but can be easily put back on. I removed it and put a digital scale underneath it. I found that dosing right into a cup and having the scale underneath was perfect. I have two sets of burrs that will be included. One is a used set thats dull (you can keep if just to show off how big they are) and a fairly new set that I would say has just been barely broken in with about 10-15lbs of coffee for my own use. This is a real Mazzer badged grinder and not a rebadged Astoria or Rio.
Why would I sell this excellent grinder? Only because I bought both an HG One as well as a Compak K10 Fresh so I have arguably the best combo for single dosing and large parties and no room for a third Titan burr set grinder. I would love to keep the Major as it does yield different characteristics (more chocolates) but I am now aiming for convenience.
