Hello:

It's Rob ...   I may be interested in buying your Espresso Machine.

I have a couple of questions for you.

Posted July 31, 2013 link

ECM Said:

I see you are including a bottomless PF what kind of PF is it?

Posted July 31, 2013 link

I'm actually not including a bottomless PF, I have a PF that is bottomless, but it was chopped all weird, I can send you pics if you're interested.

ECM Said:

Is there a group pressure meter?

Posted July 31, 2013 link

I have adjusted the OPV, there is no pressure gauge at the group to measure brew pressure.  The OPV has been adjusted to deliver 9 bar under pressure.  I have a gauge that measures at the PF.

ECM Said:

How does one adjust the group pressure?

Posted July 31, 2013 link

The brew pressure can VERY EASILY be adjusted by using a portafilter affixed pressure gauge with adjustments made to the easily accessible over pressure valve (OPV).

ECM Said:

Do you have any VST baskets you would be willing to sell?

Posted July 31, 2013 link

Unfortunately, I only have 1 VST that I use, but there will obviously be a basket included, including a single.  I know it's not obvious since I said nothing about accessories...

ECM Said:

As I sold all my gear recently I need a tamper, frothing pitcher, tamping mat and knock box.  Do you have any of these items you would be willing to sell?

Posted July 31, 2013 link

I have a tamper, frothing pitcher that I could sell.  The Tamping Mat and Knock Box are one of a kind in my household so I'll be keeping them for myself.

ECM Said:

Can the pre-infusion be programmed - start and stop or is it a typical E61 pre-infusion?

Posted July 31, 2013 link

There is no programmable preinfusion on the machine.  It's a typical E61 style pre-infusion that isn't really preinfusion, but it does what it does well.

ECM Said:

How would you describe the quality and character of the shots?  I am not a milk drinker so for me the quality of the shot is everything!

Posted July 31, 2013 link

While not a milk drinker, it's no different than other prosumer $2k machines.  It can do milk, steam and espresso all very well.  You are well accustomed to the HX water dancing so it shouldn't be a surprise that you will have to flush water initially to get the machine to deliver what you like.   The group head thermometer is a very great thing to have.  This is a machine that is highly capable of delivering an exceptional espresso if you allow it.  The differences in machines at this level are more cosmetic/function but not different at delivering quality in the cup.  E61 style thick, goopy shots.  Delicious! It's a $2000 machine, it's not a slouch. ;)

Thanks Rob :)

Tony,

Is there any maintenance/repairs that need to be done of the machine in the short term that I should be aware of? Anything developing signs of a leak? Is it due for a professional de-scaling soon?

Thanks,
Ron

Ron,

I descaled it last year while it was in use.  Any leaks I ever had had to do with a cracked plastic cap of the GICAR flowmeter.  I replaced the plastic cap with a bronze/steel? cap so that will never be a source of leaks again, I believe.
The crack happened in shipping we believe it was due to expansion inside the tight space where the water must have frozen and thawed during shipping.  I've had the machine since January 2010, it's been working flawlessly since the replacement of the flowmeter cap.

The power button, I've gone through 2, has a connector that wasn't plastic sheathed/covered and it took me a while to clue in that the connector was dropping current and ruining the power button.  Since I wrapped the lead of the connector in electrical tape the power button has worked flawlessly, and that's been over a year.

The vibe pump is as good as new.  It was replaced not too long before I bought my new machine and that's been less than a year.

Having said all that.  I would descale it but it's not a NEED. I'm not sure you NEED professional descale either if you go that way, since that may be no different to what you can do at home following instructions available at home-barista.com.  You can choose to descale the heat exchanger pipe OR the boiler.  The beauty of the HX is that you can just descale the heat exchanger or just the boiler.

I used in an tank softener and filtered water consistently.  The times that I've descaled it wasn't very much, but I did notice a difference in group head thermometer read when I did, so it was good to have done.

Thanks for the detailed response. Sounds like you've had to deal with a few teething troubles since the time you've had it. I just wanted to know that you've been taking care of the machine in terms of scale buildup and it sounds like you have :)

The discussions I've read over on HB suggest that de-scaling an HX unit is more complicated than a SBDU, as you mention having to descale the HX and the boiler separately. I guess that's a glass half-empty/half-full thing - I love the way you made it sound like a plus point as opposed to being twice as much work :p

I'll send you a PM with my info - lets talk over the phone and work out a time when I can come by and check it out.

Cheers,
Ron
