I hope this is an acceptable request as I've not narrowed down to a particular model of a grinder.

I currently have a Breville BCG800XL Smart Grinder that I'd like to upgrade for my kitchen.  I'm interested in buying something that does a MUCH better job producing coarse ground coffee with a much better consistency because the Breville will produce coarse grinds but it also seems to produce a lot of fine grounds along with it.  Thus, I need to buy something with much better improvement that won't clog up my Toddy filter for cold brewing.  I will also occasionally make espresso, but it won't be my most highly used type of grind.

I know a commercial grinder like the Bunn G1 will perform quite well, but I don't want something that tall as I want to fit it underneath my counter.

Looking for a nice and clean unit with much life left to it.  If you have something that you think will fill this profile, please submit a pic of the unit and a sample of the course grind to show consistency of the grind.

Thank you.

I have a used Baratza Vario for sale (currently listed with my Silvia), in excellent condition, which is one of the few well-regarded grinders I know of which can be easily used for both espresso and drip/press.  I believe Barazta released some particle distribution graphs, and the coarse grinds had a very unimodal distribution.  I can certainly take a pic if you're interested.

Thanks for the response, but I think I'm going to have to pass on this particular model.  This is one of the models I've researched extensively (as I've probably read/watched a LOT of reviews of grinders in the $250-500 range) and the knock on this is the coarsest setting still isn't great for french press.  It may yield more uniformity than I'm getting out of the Breville, but I'm not sure there is a grinder short of something like a Bunn G1/Grindmaster 875 that will produce the coarse grind with the level of consistency I'm looking for.  :(

Preciso is awesome for coarse grinding, the Vario not so much which is why they now have a separate steel burr set you can buy geared towards coarse on the Vario. Preciso though has very little fines, actually there pry isn't a better coarse grinder until you start getting into the ones you mentioned which are large beast lol. You can calibrate it to coarse to and have a massive range to dial in, that was one of the main points when people reviewed the machine with coarse use was it's lack of fines.

I only did french press on mine a few times and I can attest to how well it grinds coarse. But I'm not much a of a press drinker and really only use it for espresso.

No problem, just figured I would throw it out there as it seemed to meet your criteria.  Agreed, the steel burr set for the Vario would work better for non-espresso ranges, if you didn't want that option. Also, I'm sure the consistency of something like the G1 would certainly be better for press grinds, I had just thought from your original post you were looking for something that you could also use for espresso and with a more reasonable kitchen footprint.  I use mine opposite to you.  95% espresso, and 5% other -- but for me the other is usually aeropress.

If you decide not to go with the Vario, I have an nearly-new Compak K3 (still in box, less than 1/2 lb total use) that I was about to post for sale.  Let me know if you're interested.

Well, I can close this request.  Look what I scored tonight for $125 on Craigslist.  I had an email out to the sell who had this posted along with some other various vending supplies and they finally got back to me later this afternoon.
