Coffee obsession has recently taken the place of my pipe smoking and tobacco collecting, trading, etc. I was a member of a couple pipe forums in which other members woud mail out samples to "newbies" to introduce them to new blends, etc. Does this type of this happen in the coffee world? If so I'd be interested, as a newbie- looking for some type of sampler @ a reasonable fee.

Welcome. Interesting idea. I havn't heard of it before, but not saying it hasn't happened. One issue with this relates to freshness where roasted beans only last for 14days, so a bit tricky to organize. Will keep my eye out for responses here...

Really? Is paying over $33/lb for stale coffee the best recommendation? Craft has various roasters ship to craft (think NYC?) then they repack and reship from NYC. Op lives in MO. coffee from say a Portland roaster is shipped to NYC, sits until it gets repacked and then sits until 3rd Thursday of the month when they ship. Then shipped from NYC to mo. My guess, at best you'd be drinking 7 day old beans, more likely 10-12 day old. Do research here, talk to local roasters, order direct. Also, a 4oz sample of beans may not be enough to really judge a coffee. $33/lb PLEASE. thanks craft for charging as much as possible. Redbird, intelli, klatch, vivace. Order direct. ^^^ Please, these particular sampler beans are not stale by any stretch of the imagination. I've tried both Craft and MistoBox. Have you? You're right, though, that their average post-roast delay is 8-10 days. Not everyone looking to sample widely has the inclination, resources, patience, or consumption rate to justify frequent whole-bag purchases from multiple roasters.

I don't see any problem just getting the smallest bag available from any of the roasters on the HB "list of favorites". Many of them offer 12oz bags, which give you a good sense of how you like that particular coffee...but what's wrong with getting one pound just to try it? If you don't like it, try another of their coffees or move on to another roaster. If you do like it, well, now you've got just one more you can order from regularly. btw, has anyone been through ALL of the roasters on the HB list?
