I am looking to try siphon brewing because of the great things ive heard. I am looking for either a stove top or burner one. If it is the burner type i would like a butane burner instead of the wick burner..maybe...lol. I would like to stay fairly inexpensive until i decide if vac brewing is even for me. What would be a few good search terms to use? I know absolutely zero about which to get. I've looked in the CG forums and for every type listed there is someone that swears this/that brand/size/heating style is the cat's pajamas. Help me discover the worlds greatest brewing method!

Try vac pot, siphon coffee brewer, and even syphon coffee brewer. There's lots of collectors of old vac pots, I've got two and wouldn't part with either. For me, it's all about using a vac pot with the glass filter rod. I never even tried the cloth filter that came with. Good luck!

Look for "yama" "hario" "cona" "cory" and the other search terms suggested by yakster. There are also generic strangely named brewers which are Hario in everything but name,and a lot cheaper.

Really would suggest an online auction site. I've bought several that way, including some retro design classics such as the Cona "Rex" (3 of those at the last count).

+1 to yakster and the glass rod, although the bodum type plastic filter is very good too. (3 of those too, I think)

The type of heating depends on what you have/prefer. Stovetops work best on gas. Table models have either butane gas heaters, alcohol burners or electric heaters. All work. Depends on your preference.

Syphon brewing is mainly about how it works best for you rather than science, although there are some basic things like water:coffee ratios at least to start with. I think the specific brewer is probably the least factor in the process, although do get one that is the right size for the amount you want to brew. Sometimes the process won't work as well unless you use them to their designed capacity.

Which means you might need several...which is the dangerous way we syphon obsessives all start.....................

I've paid £80 (~$130) for highly desirable Cona Rex brewers in good condition, down to £3 ($4.80) for perfect used stovetop brewers.

I see quite a few, thanks. One question, I'm not sure I understand the glass rod. There doesn't appear to be a filter just the glass rod in the middle....am I missing something? Also it's important to make a full pot correct? I read that in some CG posts I think and wanted to double check it. I'll keep this open in the event a member wants to let one go to a good home :)
