REUTERS, April 20, 2007 – Kopi Luwak Counterfeiters Apprehended ...snip... Unable to get the skunk to eat the inferior Cantonese Yerkidinme coffee berries they resorted to pushing them in the other end expecting to “harvest” Exxon-like profits. As the police descended the trees the gang scattered to a nearby village and blended in with locals. Their subterfuge didn’t work and their freedom was short-lived when the police brought in the People’s CSI who assisted in the arrests by sniffing fingers.
Gang members later confessed to receiving financial support from the Coffee RoastErs Manufacturers Association (CREMA). Roasting the counterfeit beans renders the machines unusable as they continue to spew foul odors and contaminate other batches processed in the same machine; thereby requiring purchase of new equipment. ...snip....
"Coffee leads men to trifle away their time, scald their chops, and spend their money, all for a little base, black, thick, nasty, bitter, stinking nauseous puddle water." ~The Women's Petition Against Coffee, 1674
Some people have thought to make Kopi Luwak in large quantities by having the civets in captivity. The problem is that the civet is an animal which needs territory and later may die when it does not have it. Besides this, the civet feeds itself with ripe berries, which are available only in the harvest season. This means that the animal would be unproductive the rest of the year and therefore it would need other type of food to be fed during long periods. The results of having the civet in captivity have been absolutely negative.
