I wonder if it's possible for me to see a list of the members who are currently logged in and posting? That borders on chat, but I'd be mostly just curious. I could IM or ICQ them if I wanted.

Dana,I was thinking the same thing last night, early morning. I don't know where it would fit on the page in 800x600,like in chat where there's a right hand column listing all logged on members. Click on the steaming mug of coffee icon, your 'in the room',Click off the mug & you've 'left the room'. Like your saying ,it borders on chat(Can't stand those scrolling live screens!) Just a thought..

I'm not sure if we can do this. Well, we can do this, but one of the reasons the board is so slow is because of the writes to a locked table in mySQL that are really slowing down the boards. One of those writes is "views" of the board. Pretty much any active tracking of any type is going to slow down the software. I would think (and I'm not sure on this) showing an ongoing list of active users would slow down the boards even more.

We're actively working on a fix for this...

It does seem slower than what it was before, mainly, I'm assuming, from all the people viewing it.

One option is to show a 'stripped' page for people not logged in.  Basically a static HTML page that is 'updated' every hour (half-hour?) or so.  That should help.

Another thing is to use more than one SQL server.  Not sure if that's an option for you, as it might get confusing, but you could have your members list in one table, and the forum posts and such in another.  You might do it like that anyways already though. :)

I didn't realize mySQL didn't support row level locking - ouch. I suppose we'll just have to wait until you upgrade to v4 for this.
