Subject: Best bottled water for espresso
 

I'm wondering if there is a consensus out there on the best bottled water to use for espresso, balancing taste and scale.

As far as I know very soft water (distilled) is good from a scale building standpoint but does not create a very well tasting espresso, which require a higher mineral level.

I am about to unbox my new Londinium and want to give her the luxury treatment from day one.

Any recommendations, thoughts?

Don't use distilled or RO water.
Most filtered water sometimes called spring water is where you want to be.

I second Wayne's suggestion to NOT use RO or distilled.

I use water from a 5-gallon dispenser, refilling the containers at Ozarka, Glacier, or Watermill Express stations for anywhere from $1 - $1.25 for 5 gallons.

I guess distilled and RO should be avoided due to taste.

How does spring water compare to brita filtered medium tap water in terms of scale?

Depends on the water supply where you live.  In Utah and here in San Antonio I have pretty hard water from the tap.  Running it through a Brita helps.. a little, but comparing it to what I get from Ozarka, Glacier, and Watermill Express is night and day.  My fridge has a much bigger carbon filter (similar to Brita, only considerably bigger) and is over 10 times harder that the bottled stuff I buy.

Have you tested your local water?  If not, buy a test kit or at least strips to see where you are at currently.  Only after that can you assess what your filtration method of choice is producing.

If you don't want to bother with bottled water, ZeroWater gets rave reviews, so that is another option.  Personally, the $100 I spent on a water dispenser and $10 for two 5-gallon bottles has been money very well spent.

Last I looked, the Insanely Long Water FAQ's shortcut recommendation was Crystal Geyser, and that's what I've been running in my Caravel and Ursula. The Ellimatic has been getting carbon filtered tap water and getting a annual descaling just as a preventative matter, though L.A. tap water isn't super-hard, especially after the slight reduction in scaling minerals that comes with the filtering, and I haven't had any issues with mineral deposits.

I use Smart water only. I think it tastes the best. Does anyone have any experience or problems from this? Haven't tried Crystal Geyser but may give it a try if that's the consensus. I've also tried Dasani but I think when I tested the two smart was softer....

If we talk about commercial bottled water, it is in many forms such as distilled, reverse osmosis, drinking, spring, and mineral. Mineral water is extremely hard, so it is not advisable. Spring water depends on the source, so it is advisable to check the source whether it is hard or soft. Drinking water uses either RO and distilled which is safe to use but be sure it has been enhanced with mineral or pH balanced. To be sure, you better check the hardness of water with a test kit in order not to affect critically the taste of your brew.
