Interesting. If I try this on the Dream I get water and a huge cloud of steam everywhere if portafilter is empty. If the portafilter has the spent puck still in it, it's more manageable but I had an incident where I didn't fully de-pressurize, and when I removed the portafilter it blew grounds everywhere. So at least for now I think I'll stick to purging through the steam wand - less to go wrong for a beginner like me!
Warming the group doesn't seem to be too big of a deal - it's usually hot to the touch... I find it drips a little bit as the boiler gets up to steam pressure, so that seems to get it nice and hot. Then once I've purged, I run a second or two of water through it before I remove and dose.
Seems to be working out.
As it turns out, it looks like the Dream has a thermometer where I thought a pressure gauge, so easy to see where you are, and you don't need the Polder.
I think older versions of the Dream had a pressure gauge. But yes, mine has a temperature gauge which seems pretty handy. Something I've noticed is the "momentum" of heating... i.e., if I turn on the steam switch and let it start heating up, then turn the steam switch off again the temp will keep creeping up for a good 10-15 seconds after the switch is off. Definitely helps to learn the timing of the machine, although I'm not being too precise with my temps just yet.

If you leave the spent puck in while steaming, this will bake the coffee residue in the group and foul your next shot with burnt rancid coffee residue taste. I recommend whatever your SBDU routine, get the group cleaned right after the shot, before steaming.

After steaming in a SBDU, I do open, well leave the wand open and turn the pump on to fill the boiler until water exits. Is this the best way to do it? well, IDK, it is the way I have always done it, Frost may have a better way. The main thing is to keep the heater from getting "dry" and thus over heating.
Do pull the PF before letting the machine heat up, cleaning a burnt puck is not nice. Even now, I may get busy and forget to clean the PF, OK not often but it does happen. By the time I find it, sometimes hours later, it is a baked on rock. I find the easiest way to clean is to just pull another shot through the rock, this will get it wet again and cleaning is much easier. UH, needless to say, this cleaning shot is not consumed.
