So time for an update. After lots of research on this site I am now leaning towards the gaggia classic and a baratza vario preciso. I can get a refurbished classic for $270 and the preciso refurbished for $230. It seems this is going to be the best value for a starter set that is capable of pulling a good shot. I bailed on the pharos because my wife was not thrilled about a manual and I got the impression the gaggia is faster and maybe even more forgiving. I understand it has a smaller aluminum boiler and a chappy steam attachment. Anything obvious I'm missing? I am excited to get into this for $500. We will see where it leads.
