The moving parts inside are not moving properly from position to position. The mechanical part that recieves the grounds, lowers the tamp/sieve into them and holds them while the water is pumped through (The Brew Unit) is unable to position itself properly. The machine can't go back to ready because it can't finish the last thing it is trying.
You can take out the driptrays and used grounds tray. Unplug it. Put your hand in and feel around above where the used grounds tray sits. Knock free any clumps of coffee that could prevent the moving parts from moving freely. Wipe out all the crap that has fallen to the bottom of the machine, put the trays back in and give it another shot. If it still struggles take it to your service place to get the brew unit rebuilt.
