Take a look at the video. I have been having issues with using a naked portafilter. I assume that channeling is my issue, but I do not know how to change this. I have tried different levels of grind and tamp pressure. I shoot for between 30 and 35, but have tamped a bit harder to see if that would help--no dice... Sorry for the crappy quality of the video. Please forgive me.

I don't see a video link. However, your tamp pressure should not be modified. Rather you would adjust grind fineness, distribution (and potentially dose), to correct channeling issues. Read article 12, "easy guide to better espresso at home" on www.espressomyespresso.com It's about halfway down the right column under how to.

With a bottomless portafilter all the factors (e.g. grind, dose, distribution, tamping) that contribute to extraction have to be perfect. Otherwise you'll have sputtering. That's why a naked PF i such an amazing diagnostic tool: it reveals all your weaknesses. Unless you tamp uneven, tamping will probably not be the problem. Most likely it's distribution. Have you tried using the Weiss Distribution Technique?

I have tried multiple times to post the video, but the file is too large. I compressed it into a zip file... still too large. Thank you all so much for your input, though. I will definitely try out the suggestions tomorrow at work.
