I am very new to coffee and espresso in general. I do know that I like the taste of espresso powder (or grind I guess you could say). I am going to start adding espresso grounds to my morning protein shake so I can get a healthy dose of energy (plus I really enjoy the flavor). I am currently adding 2 tsp of the starbucks brand dark espresso (that I got from the grocery store) and I am wondering how much caffeine I am consuming by doing this. Also I figure espresso would be better than coffee grinds because of the higher caffeine content. I have searched all over the internet and looked on the bag but I do not see where it has the amount of caffeine. Also I am curious if I am putting a double shot or a single shot in my protein shakes when I mix it in. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks! Also how many calories is the espresso grind? (I am adding it to water and protein powder to keep the calories down).

One thing you should realize. Though Starbucks may call their dark roast 'espresso', the term espresso refers to the result when brewing ground coffee using a very specific method..that is, to force 200 degree water through finely ground tightly packed coffee at 9 to 10 bar pressure. Nearly any coffee can be used to make espresso, but some coffees are blended and roasted to give a pleasant taste profile when brewed as espresso. Caffeine levels in dark roasts when compared to the same coffee light roasted are more, but not that much more. As to exactly how much, I'm not sure, but I suppose it would be certainly not even near the caffeine level in a double shot of brewed espresso, since you're only using 2 tsp.

Generally, if you really want a high caffeine content you should concentrate on light roasts, not dark roasts. Light roasts have higher caffeine content than the darker roasts: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coffee_roasting

I'll just post and say mixing that small amount of grinds in won't do anything for energy in a protein shake, darker roast have less caffein anyway and Charbucks goes beyond dark roast lol, if you really like the taste of coffee in your shake try www.truscience.com , that's where I get all my protein from. For one thing they actually show their blend % vs other companies hiding b/c their using junk cheap whey. Their wheyology product has a jamocha flavor that I've had and is really good, if you love coffee, you'll love it. I even would pull a double sometimes and add. Their flavors are accurate too and blow everyone else away, nothing worse then downing some nasty tasting protein (ala Optimum Nutrition which is $$$ and taste like crap). I'm using the chocolate peanut butter in their Trutein line, taste like Reese Pieces mmm lol.
Add some quality maltodextrin (yes there's a difference) and you'll get the extra cals (only like a 120 or something like that in a scoop can't remember) but also a ton of carbs for energy. I make my 1st shake in the morning with dextrin added before the gym. I only use whole milk, but this companies protein is also the only one that taste good in water when I've tried that, but milk is way better not just for taste but the cals, healthy fats, and carbs.
