With all of your help, I think I'm going to decide primarily between the le'lit pl041qe, the crossland cc1, and the gaggia classic with the rancilio steam wand mod.
I'm a little wary of the cc1 being so new (so it doesn't have any tried & tested reviews over years of use) and I would prefer not to make modifications (which cuts against the classic).
I'll read and think more and, of course, any other opinions/info would be welcome.

I think any of the three you mentioned should work well. The CC1 is kind of a SBDU and a half. It isn't a DB or HX but wirh the thermoblock it does not have the temp and time issues that a SBDU has. If you are uncomfortable with its shorter history that's fine too. You have the basic info and I think you understand it so good luck in your choice.
