Hi,
I'd love to buy the Chris King espresso tamper for my dad, a cyclist, to use on his Pasquini Livietta T2. According to the manufacturer's website, the portafilter is 57mm in diameter. Would I be okay with buying him the 56mm tamper? Or is that too small?

i think you'd be doing his espresso a disservice. the chris king tamper looks cool but if he needs a 57mm tamper, i'd get him a 57mm.
maybe contact chris king about other bases out there that may fit. maybe they can just sell you the handle and you can buy another base from somewhere.
otherwise, espressoparts sells a 57mm tamper with a big cog laser etching.

I would also recommend the Espresso Parts tamper, but if your heart is set on the Chris King, you can always take the 58mm tamper to a local machine shop and have them machine it down to the right diameter. Bring the filter basket with you to use as a gauge for the optimal size (if you/he have multiple filter baskets, bring them all to make sure it'll fit all of them).
yup that's the one! espresso parts has some great handles too. i believe everything in their "compressore" line has the option of getting that bike cog tamper base. http://www.espressoparts.com/TampersTamping
ps: i use the espressoparts tamper at work and would say the quality is excellent. great feel to it.
