Hi there fellow addicts, here's a post from Amsterdam. Being Dutch, I'm new to coffeegeak.com, so I'm not entirely sure if this is the right forum for my question. Anyway, we'll see.
Here's the story: whenever I'm abroad, I seem to spend too much wasted time on trying to find that one superb espresso. So my question to all you experts: is there anything like a comprehensive guide to coffeehouses around the globe?
I don't mean Starbucks and the like - I mean the small, dedicated good-vibe ones, where the moment you walk in you know you're in for a treat. Where your eyes immediately get caught by that shiny and clean mean espresso machine. Where the familiar sound of the grinding beans makes you feel at home straight away. Where they have one of those cramped message boards with an over-enthusiastic abundance of massage- and yoga offerings. Where somehow everyone owns a macbook, and windows-users seem to be banned from the cafe. Where.... well, I guess you get the idea.
Does anyone know a website perhaps, or an app? The ones I found are quite limited, or just present an overview of every single coffee serving establishment around, listing many places I would rather avoid.
Any feedback would be most welcome!

Welcome to the board. I think part of the reason that such a list is hard to find is that coffee shops go into and out of business fairly quickly and keeping up such a list would be very hard to do.
As an aside, your description of the atmosphere is not some place that I would like to be. I detest Mac or "I" anything and I really have no desire to attend anything yoga. Just saying YMMV!

Yeah well, I know what you mean, and I was actually being somewhat cynical but perhaps didn't express this well, being Dutch and all.. And yes, life without 'I' is great! But that's a different story.
Anyway, thanks for your reply, and if anyone else knows any kind of coffeehouse-directory, that would be greatly appreciated.

It is the whole attitude that the company has, not the users. I am more "free market" and "open source" and the mac/apple/I* is more of a big government, do it my way kind of thing. YMMV!

Back to the OP, like I said, the problem is that this is a very dynamic market kind of thing and by the time a list is made, it is out of date. There are larger chains in the U.S. that you can more or less depend on being good as they have been around for a while but I have seen good shops go out of business due to lack of traffic, for whatever reason, location whatever.
Then there are the chains that are large and of moderate quality at best but they are everywhere and they sell the image of quality drinks (green aprons anyone?)

I started in assembly and APL on a 360 mainframe in the early '70s. I've "rolled my own" on more than one occasion, so I fully understand where you're coming from.
