If an espresso doesn't taste good that's tip #1 that it wasn't made properly.
Something needs to be changed or adjusted.
Espresso should be delicious on its own. If your not basing your milk drinks off of a delicious espresso shot aren't you wasting your time and coffee? Yes.
Anything added to espresso be it milk or sugar to what you have should enhance the qualities of the espresso shot, not cover them up.

Straight shots from my Caravel are so naturally sweet that I've never found the need to add anything to them. Usually 3-4 shots a day, pulling generally from 14-15 gram doses in the Caravel double basket.

I favor predominantly nutty, milk chocolate flavors (Redbird and Veltons come to mind), and to me I find that adding a little Splenda somehow accentuates those flavors nicely.
My thoughts exactly. I find the flavors I am looking for are there in the first place, they just need to be amplified/enhanced a little to suit my tastes.

The question really startled me. Why own the machine, why make the espresso, if you don't like it straight? Oh! You like the cafe au lait or the latte or the cappucino? So do I. But for all the big difference, you don't need an espresso machine to make those other drinks. And if the espresso tastes bad to you, then the latte will taste bad as well. At least, that's what I find. I don't mean to offend those who don't like espresso. I think most people don't like it. I just don't see why anyone would own a machine or make espresso if they didn't like it. It's a pain to make considering how easy it is to make coffee in an automatic drip machine.
