I think I know which side is positive on the heating element. One of them has some red ink on it.

I bought a new thermostat 'cause I have no idea how the old one hooks up. It only cost me $10, and I probably would have blown the old one anyway by not connecting it right.

The only thing I'm still having trouble with is the pressurestat. It doesn't have + or - symbols anywhere on it. There's three plugs. There's a 1, a 2, and a 4. It doesn't make any sense. I'll have to search around and find instructions on this particular pstat. Plus, the only 2 wires that reach the pstat are both blue, which also makes no sense, unless the pstat uses 2 positive connections? If that's true, then there's no wire for the negative/ground.

Update:

Found a picture of the pstat. Mine is the Mater pstat.

I don't remember a wire connected to common, so the 2 wires I have were connected to normally open and normally closed. One of the cables also goes to the boiler's positive connection. So I'm guessing the boiler's cable goes to open, and when things hit the right pressure, it switches to closed and the other cable stops the boiler from continuing to heat up? Or something like that..

Another update:

The over pressure valve is tightened so tightly I cannot untighten it. It seems I may need to get a new one. I wonder if the Oscar's OPV will fit the Ellimatic.

Looks like I need a new over pressure valve for the group. I've heard it's set at 14 bars, which I guess is okay for now. It's way too tight to ever budge loose. I think Chris' coffee carries the right opv, but I also need a compatible 3-way valve because I can't get that loose from the opv. I've looked at Lowes and Home Depot, and neither carries the right 3-way valve.

I guess the easiest route is to keep it the way it is. 14-bars is sorta high, but I can't change it otherwise.

Update:

And NOW it needs new steam wand gaskets! Grrrr!

I'm sick of messing with this thing.

But when you are done it should last a really really long time and you know it inside out.  You have learned a lot, you have a lot to be proud of.

If I want to make these brass parts shiny again, how do I go about refinishing them? I tried extra fine sandpaper and a wire brush. I thought about getting a dremel and using it's polishing tools. My only other thought is would citric acid make everything shiny again?

Citric acid makes it all look like new after an overnight soak.

I found NOW Citric Acid, which is supposedly 100% pure. Only health food and vitamin stores seem to carry it. Sears also carries it, not sure why.

How much should I use if I want to soak the parts in a big 5 gallon bucket? And would it eat through plastic?

This is how I did it.

You can see how good it makes all the parts look.

As to how much to add, the more you add the stronger the solution will be and the less soak time.

From 5% to 20% solution according to the label.

Stronger would be for more hardcore nasty-ness or scale.

Mmmm.. shiny. :D

I hope mine can look that good too.

Update:

I decided to try using some lemon and lime juice from those plastic lemons/limes. I doubt there's any actual juice in them as they're mostly lemon/lime flavoring and citric acid. Nobody makes real juices anymore. Flavoring and citric acid is cheaper to use.

I added water and also added some baking soda. The mixture turned a funny green color, then I started to notice the metal turning a brighter color, and dirt started floating on top, so the mixture seems to be working.
