I figure maybe that plus a platform with a bathroom scale, and the presser fitted to a tamper piston should get me awfully close to my target. I could put a recessed area for a basket into the wooden base.
Hope it isn't all solved and a waste of bandwidth....

I answered you back on the other thread, anyway a pull type scale won't work, well not in the normal way is is used anyway, as you would not be able to consistently get the length of pull right.
What I mean is, for one of these scales to work, each weight pulls it down a different amount from the starting point. Unless you rigged it up somehow to a moving BOTTOM PF holder so that the PF holder is free to move and is only restrained by the scale thus allowing the scale to gauge force regardless of the amount of movement of the PF.
The issue I see with the click mat is that it is solid. This means that your setup will not square the PF to the tamper thus giving you an angular tamp relative to the top of the grounds basket unless you are using a naked PF in which case the bottom of the PF or the grounds basket will square the PF to the tamper rig.
If you do want to use the can crusher as a foundation, you could cut a slot in the bottom so that the spouts can hang under the bottom of the crusher....... if it is strong enough to withstand the pressure after it is cut. Another way would be to put a raised platform on the bottom so that there is room for your spouts.
A tube in tube with a set pressure spring setup could be attached to the moving top part of your crusher with a mounting screw to mount your favorite tamper head on, the spring would regulate the pressure (until it bottomed out, then you just over ride it) the base would allow free movement of the PF for alignment.
Now you need a wall close by or need to make a stand to hold the setup in a vertical position lest the ground coffee fall out of the PF before it gets tamped while mounted sideways :P
