Subject: preground espresso?

I have been wanting to get into making espressos at home for awhile but i dont have much money right now. I have a friend that works at starbucks so i can get a discount on the Sirena they have there. I eventually want to get a rocky grinder but is it really a huge difference to have a local roaster (klatchroasting.com) grind a bag of fresh espresso for me then for me to grind it at home? I just want to get started and i can invest in a nice grinder later so i was just wondering if i would be wasting my time having just an espreso machine for a few months?

Thanks!

If you'll notice all over this site, everyone always stresses that the grinder is /the/ single most important piece of coffee equipment.

If you can't spring for a Rocky or similar, you might be able to swing by with something in the same class as a virtuoso

As already stated a good grinder is the most essential tool for making good espresso/coffee.
If you buy pre-ground it loses it's freshness very quickly and you will be brewing stale after a couple of hours.
Get a good grinder and use a moka pot or french press until you can afford a decent espresso machine.

Thanks guys. I guess i was just wondering if the ground espresso would keep for 5-7 days if i stored it airtight and still get an exceptional shot. Then once i got a grinder i would have the hang of it and be amazed at the difference.

Would the 5-7 airtight preground beans taste better then starbucks? lol

get the baratza from starbucks with the discount (if it's that great) and start saving your money for the machine at that point.. that machine is no good pulling shots from beans ground 15 minutes ago.. much less 5 days..

as for if it's better than starbucks or not.. i don't know.. probably not.. you could aim higher than that..

the grinder is useful to have without the machine, the same isnt' true vice versa

I found my Gaggia Baby in WLL's clearance section.  As for the grinder, I have had great results with my Nemox Lux, which was only 179 at 1800espresso.  I wouldn't try preground espresso, I've done it in the past and it doesn't work.

superior to the other grinders mentioned is the Gaggia MDF.
Owned one for years, was great and is MADE for espresso.

commonly avail. used.  example: ebay  currently $31.00

dave

preground espresso is fairly bad after the 1st hour.
