I would like to descale my Gaggia Carezza, as I bought it used and suspect it hasn't been cleaned in a while.  Where can I purchase the descaling agent?

Danny,

Your profile says you are in LA - I don't know if it's convenient for you, but I found a place in the Valley.

I was looking for descaler yesterday and called Supreme Bean.  They recommended this espresso parts store in the Valley: http://www.espressopartsource.com/wholesale/index.php

The phone number is 818-786-7179, located at 8101 Orion Ave (just south of Roscoe, between Sepulveda and the 405).  My wife stopped by and picked up some cleaning supplies and said the guys there were very friendly and showed her how to do a couple things on their machine.

Hope this helps.

Mike

Perfect, thanks!  Maybe the valley is good for something after all. :)

Hey now - it's also great for oppressive heat in the summer and horrible traffic all year long.

There are heaps of online options too if you want to buy products - www.coffeeparts.com www.espressowarehouse.com and so on.

Do you want a specific product? Backflush, descale boiler? Often I've found my coffee supplier also stocks good products, or even better whoever sold you your espresso machine.

Check out brewery supply stores for citric acid, if you have a Costco business center or a Cash and Carry in your area they might sell Cafiza/Purocaf.  I get it at my local Cash and Carry, do not use Cafiza to descale your boiler, use it to soak the shower screen, baskets, portafilter.  Check out http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Gaggia/ for information on cleaning and maintaining your machine.

Cheers,
David

I totally agree that citric acid may not be the best descaler to use in aluminum boiler machines. Go to www.partsguru.com and order some of Edward's descaler. Look in the cleaning products section. It's 100% safe for Gaggia machines and will not harm them in any way. And it's not very expensive. Another good descaler is Durgol, but it's more expensive than most and does work fast and well.

I have used a mild citric acid solution in my Gaggia with no ill effects.  You could use Cleancaf which Starbucks used to sell, or you could pull the boiler and manually descale it.

Ordered some cleancaf.  Thank you for the warnings about citric acid and my gaggia.  Hopefully the cleancaf will be mild enough.

I could try to manually clean my boiler, but there's a good chance I would kill myself.
