The grey thing is actually an adapter inside an adapter, and it's a quick-disconnect assembly. Push down the ring around the outside and pull the smaller grey adapter out. This will allow you to use the larger tubing to come from the flojet outlet (maybe it's 3/8" ?). Then use a John Guest or Watts type tube adapter-to-pipe fitting and the plastic pipe to screw into the braided hose connection.
Sorry for the poor picture, but this shows both the tube outlet of the flojet and the adapter setup into the machine's hose. The braided hose may actually be BSP (British Standard Pipe thread) so I found that the plastic pipe fitting seals much better (as shown - it has a few wraps of teflon tape on it as well)

Got it, thanks again for the fantastic, detailed assistance. You really are a great help, Jon.
Anyways, the new machine arrived dented and dirty, with a steam knob that shattered on removing the tape, and a strange, small length of severed bright yellow wire inside the box that does not seem to be missing from anywhere inside the machine (I popped the top and looked). Internals seem to be ok, just dirty. According to the auction the machine was tested and works, so I'm hoping I don't find evidence of bad boiler scale or other problems. I didn't buy a project machine... this was supposed to work right out of the box.
Anyway, the moment of truth will really be tomorrow when I get the proper adapter to connect up the water, and fire her up.
Let's hope I don't have to start a new thread called "Diagnosing the Miniwega".
