Subject: 23 gr for a double & 15 gr for a single!!! (Crazy - I know!!!)

I have been getting great shots for a while now. I only use my scale now and then for special questions or problems. I wanted to know how much coffee I was using for my doubles and it turns out that I am using 22-23 grams for a double and 14-15 grams for a single.

I dosed as I usually do and then I emptied the PF into the bowl sitting on the scale to find out how much coffee I was using.

According to the standard ca 8 grams and ca 17 grams this is crazy!
What is a barista to do?
The shots are really good! Lots of body, flavour, aromas....
Most of the time I am making ca 2 cl ristretto shots. I haven't yet weighed if I am using quite as much coffee at the espresso bar where I pull shifts or if this is only my home routine. But since I use the same machine at work and at home that should not be a factor....

Are there different sizes on regular LM baskets?

what do you say?

thanks,

alexander

Nope - I'm sure. I wheighed only coffee. I guess the LM basket fits a lot more than others. The 22 grams in the double didn't surprise me as much as the 15 grams for the single!

I use 19 to 20 grams ... and pour 1 to 2 ounces depending on the tatse of that blend or single origin bean.

I also never weighed beans and was surprised to see my scale hit 19 grams yet I have since not been able to get any good results using less then Maximum dose ( my machine fits only 20 grams in the double basket ) 14 grams is just strong coffee.

Cheers ...

LM baskets are huge.  Seriously.  I can't get a decent 14g shot because my tamper bottoms out on the ridge before full compression takes effect.

I have to dose 16g, minimum.

The Synesso style baskets on the other hand average at around 16g, IIRC, but the lack of a ridge means a 14g double isn't out of touch.

Technically, you're pulling doubles and triples.  I don't care what the basket is called.  14-15g is a double.  22-23 is definitely a triple.
