This is already a conversation on another thread, but I figure it would draw more attention if it had its own thread. Here's the original: "While I wait for Rocky...I am thinking..." .
I want to remove the double spout on the stock Silvia (non-pro) PF. Its not a big deal, but since I always drop doubles into a single espresso cup, I find it more practical to have just a single spout or better yet no spout! The member Longhorn has inspired me to do this.
ANyways, I bent my screwdriver trying to loosen the spout! Its not coming off!!! It wouldn't even budge a little. Perhaps it doens't come off.... anyone else have opinions/ideas?
It comes off. Try holding the spout in boiling water while keeping the bowl as cool as possible (e.g., a small wet towel w/ice). It's worked for me before. Don't overdo it; I've heard the handle can snap. And use a screwdriver with a thicker shaft or clamp the spout in a soft vice.
I don't want to spend another $70 YET... I will eventually get one, but not right now.
Dan: Out of the various screw drivers I have, only one was thin enough to fit into the spout hole, yet thick enough to aquire the leverage to loosen the spout. I'm definetly not a gurrly man so I think if I keep trying I'll crack the handle. I used some vice grips with a towel and I still managed to chip the spout just a tiny little bit. I'll have to take it over to my friend's house where he has a vice thing attached to table - better leverage....

My machine and portafilter are somewhat old (circa 1998 I believe), so perhaps the standard portafilter has changed a bit since then. Here's what my portafilter looks like, see if it's the same as yours:

Yah mine looks the same. My Silvia was "tested" by Rancilio in June 2003.... so maybe things have changed. I actually had a dream that the PF spout came off hehe

I just did it a month or two ago. It wasn't this hard, nowhere near hard enough to break it, though I left marks on the spout. The vice will work, I think. Good luck! It is nice to have it off...

Not to insult but are you doing lefty-loosey, righty-tighty? This is spouts up.
I drink espresso so I can work longer, so I can make more money, so I can drink more espresso, so I can work longer, so I can make more money, so I can drink more espresso...
