I just upgraded to a Bezzera Magica and thinking about some upgrades. Will be adding an Eric's Thermometer for Function but for Fashion I found the following company that does complete wooden upgrades . Has complete sets for joysticks, lever handles and portafilter handles. Looks really sharp I think.
My machine will look similar to the below. ... but with an ugly thermometer coming out of the grouphead :-)
Just curious because the Elektra Sixities uses Bakelite for their similar look and states "Plastic bakelite handle on portafilter, pull lever, and valve controls - wood is not used because water can damage it."
Anyone have wooden accessories and if so any issues to report?
I love my wooden set. It's pictured in my avatar. I got mine from Dave Stephens, who goes by cannonfodder on Home-Barista. I ordered it about a month after I got my Duetto. It took him about 3 months to get to my order, so I'd say I've had them in use for a year and a half. The only downside (not really a complaint), is I am extremely averse to soaking the pf in Cafitza. Instead I just remove the spring for a soak and then clean the rest of the pf manually with Q-tips. Regarding water damaging wood...sure, but you can refinish them whenever they need it...whether it's periodic oiling, or sanding and reapplying whatever sealant you want. So far, I have not even had to think about it. I think the upgrade in aesthetics is worth it, even if I have to replace the set every 5 years (which I won't).
. Always remember the most important thing is what ends up in your cup!
That is pretty much what I thought but when I was trying to decide which wood species would look best I went to read the Sixities product description because I always thought it looked really nice. I thought they used rosewood for some reason but then I found the statement above about bakelite which caught me off guard.
