Subject: Help!! Rocket Giotto Evoluzione V2 is dead...

I've had the Giotto since November 2012 and haven't had an issue.  The machine is powered for three and a half hours on week days, and five hours at the weekend.  In other words, it's not getting much of a work-out.  This morning I made two cappuccinos, which my wife and I drank.  I returned to the machine half an hour later to make another two, as usual, and the Rocket was dead.  Indeed, there was a distinct smell of electrical burning or singeing.  I took off the lid to see if it was the thermostat breakers (white buttons in this model), but no, they couldn't be depressed, so I'm assuming they hadn't popped.  I couldn't see evidence of burning but it didn't smell right on the inside of the machine.

I'll be gutted if this is a major failure after so little use.  I changed the fuse in the power plug in case that was it, but all I'm getting is a very dull green light rather than the usual blazing green, and there's no other action.  Is this a power unit or controller failure?  Any thoughts or advice gratefully received!

From what I know Rocket machines are all hand build.  I would contact Rocket and see what they can do.  With a hand built anything this can happen from time to time.  IMO if your don't see any visual malfunctions or burned wires I doubt the problem is major.  If your using the resivior option did you possibly let the boiler run dry?  If so you may have fried the element.

I doubt it ran dry, it has auto fill.
It is still a new machine, contact the warranty information contacts and let them take care of it. There is no reason that machine should not last decades. Don't void the warranty.

True that.  I forgot  about the auto refill.

It didn't run dry. The reservoir was three quarters full. There was no visible damage but a very distinct smell. Extremely disappointing that the machine should fail so soon.

It sounds like the powerboard has failed.
Electronic failures happen. Don't be disappointed, be looked after. Contact the retailer about how they can take care of it.
