Subject: Troubleshoot Simonelli Oscar thermostat

Hi all,

I bought a used Simonelli Oscar off of ebay this past April and it was working great. However, the thermostat keeps resetting every time I turn and leave the machine on, the thermostat resets and it cools down. Do I need to replace the thermostat or is it another issue.

Thanks in advance!

What are you calling a thermostat?

It's the high limit thermostat. The one with the resettable button, http://www.espressoparts.com/S_383

How long a cooling flush do you have to do before the "water dance" stops and you can pull a shot? How long does the machine have to be left on before the high limit resets? What's the p-stat set to?

Usually 6-8 seconds, but the high limit thermostat resets already even before I pull a shot. From a cold start, the machine would be on for 15 minutes before the high limit resets. The Mater p-stat is around 7-8.

If your p-stat was set too high (or not working properly) that would cause the boiler to go over temp and trip the high-limit. Do you have a way to measure boiler pressure?

I'm afraid not. How do I connect a pressure gauge to the Oscar?

There are a couple of ways. Easiest and cheapest is one  that attaches to the steam wand. Basically it's a pressure gauge with a short length of hose and a couple of hose clamps. I think Orphan Espresso sells one, as do a couple of other of the regular sources.

I made a wand pressure gauge with a 30psi meter, matching 1/8" barb adapter, short length of flexible-reinforced tubing and a couple of hose clamps.

To use you remove the tip from the steam wand, wet the hose and slip it over the tube.  Use hose clamp to hold in place.  Open the steam valve to check pressure, and you don't need to open all the way.

14.7psi = 1 bar (approximately)

Another thing to consider is whether you need a descale as that can cause overheating.

Lastly, it's not unusual for breakers of any kind to wear out and need replacement.

Good luck.

Thanks all!

I see the steam wand pressure gauge from OE, but I'm not sure if the tube would fit on the steam wand of the oscar. Does anyone know if the 1/4" rubber tube is the right size?
