Subject: Tool to Unseat Double Basket from Portafilter: Silvano Quick Mill

i find it rather difficult to remove/unseat the double basket (original from Quick Mill) from the spring clip in the portafilter holder on the Quick Mill Silvano.

i've used a screwdriver (its head is too narrow, and it is too thin as there is an approximately 1/16 inch or 1.5mm gap between the edge of the basket and the portafilter),  and i've used the back flush solid basket's edge, etc.   None are ideal.

the result is that the edge of the double basket gets slightly chipped and one can almost get one's skin cut from the minuscule chips.

i'm looking for a proper tool that would make this daily clean up task easier and more efficient.

looked at:

-  Spudger, stainless steel

Interfuse Metal Spudger Thin Opening and Pry Repair Tool

-  Titan 11505 Mini Stainless Steel Prybar:

None of these seem that perfect as there is a rather substantial amount of "play" when the double basket is clipped inside, i.e. even when the double basket is firmly secured and in place,  one may pry the basket outward and it will easily move enough so the gap space at the edge will increase from being able to fit a dime to being able to just fit a quarter!    I estimate that range of "play" to be from 1.3mm to 1.8mm, a "play" of 0.5mm!!

may i ask if anyone has found a good solution to this inconvenient situation?   i remove the double basket each evening in order to insert the solid back flush basket in order to perform several "plain water" back flushes DAILY to reduce the chance of undesirable build up.   that entails the removal of the double basket, installation of the solid back flush basket, removal of the solid back flush basket, then all parts are left to dry over night.     hence, a proper tool would facilitate this effort.

thanks in advance!

The blunt end of a bottle opener works perfectly for me.  Check the dollar stores for one that's just thin enough to get under the edge and pry carefully around the edge until it releases.

You can remove the retention spring, that will free things up a lot. Or, you could do what I do and go bottomless all the time. This allows easy access to both sides of the basket and if you want to remove the basket from the PF, just push up on the bottom of the basket.

Short of these, it really is whatever you find. I used to use a butter knife, the thin edge easily gets under the rim then twist to pry out the basket, oh, I  used the knife like I was going to cut the basket from the PF, long edge of knife in the slot between the basket and the PF.

A paint can opener works good. 50 cents at any paint store . The edge of a single basket works good also.

If the backflush blind basket technique does not work, then you should ask your vendor for a new spring to fit inside the portafilter.

Pallo makes a barista tool that has a tapered screwdriver like edge in one area that is designed for this. I bought mine from espresso parts.

It's called the caffeine wrench - $10.45

Thanks for the various tips and pointers, gents.

After trying rather hard on finding the best tool,  I finally decided that nothing I've tried is as good as the paint can opener for roughly $0.75 here in Manhattan (a local hardware store).  It somehow hooks under the edge of the basket and the highly curved tip of the device essentially guarantees that the leverage will be there for the most effective area to be pushed.

Thanks so much for all the tips and especially this paint can opener tip.  It really does work like a charm.  They all ought to include one of these in every espresso machine's box!

may i ask if there's a way to Private Message someone?  for example, i'd like to discuss your idea of the handle "matching my tamper", etc, but i don't see a Private Message function anywhere, nor is there a way to share email addresses privately.

thx.

Not within the forums. But at the bottom of each post there will be a button to email a member (if they have specified a public email address in their profile). See below.
