Ok... I spent the evening descaling again. One of my problem is that I have three pressure gauges and none of them agree exactly. I know I am very close to 9 bars but if I average out all of the ones I have it looks like about 8.25 to 8.5 bars with no flow. I think this may be slightly higher than I reported earlier. This is kind of like a man with two watches never knows what time it is. I know that I am close... but no lab quality pressure gauges here.
No matter how you look at it... pressure is way up.... I have made two drinks since I got the higher pressure and I was able to drink both of them. Even though I had to quickly adjust the grinder to allow for the new higher pressure, I was able to turn out almost a textbook shot this morning in terms of yield and pull time. That doesn't mean it was the best shot I have ever had... I have had better... but it was pretty good.

One thing I have not mentioned before is that I did get a bunch of little black sooty looking particles in the water that passed through the steam block. They were light, tended to stay suspended in the water for along time before they settled to the bottom. No idea what this was.
The thermoblock is probably Aluminium (they usually are), a metal which does not take kindley to descaling, even with buffered descalers. The black particles would tend to confirm my assumption. I also think sometimes people don't really understand about descaling.
Don't use hard water in your Espresso machine
98%+ of problems are caused by hard water
Descaling doesn't prevent hard water problems, it just reduces them and can introduce problems of it's own
Each descale is a tiny little death for your machine, a sort of best of a bad lot scenario.
As an example, my 6 year old Duetto has not had a single problem during my period of ownership....but I don't use hard water in her.
