Subject: I see a Lelit PL041 on Craigslist for $250 should I get it?

Hi,

I was going to wait and buy the grinder and play around with my moka pot some more but I just checked Craigslist and saw what I think is an amazing steal or at least what I think is a steal a Lelit PL041 for $250. Should I buy this while its up and if so are there any pertinent questions I should ask like how long have they had the machine. I am new to this so I am not sure what I should ask in order to make sure I don't get a lemon or a machine that is at the end of its life span.

Thanks.

Jenn,

The LeLit could be a great bargain or it could be a piece of junk only suitable for use as a paper weight.  In view of your inexperience, I would stick to new equipment.  Since you don't have a grinder, any machine you buy will be worthless untill you get a decent esxpresso grinder.  First Line has the new improved PL041 for $429.00 and is packaged with a grinder for just under $600.00.

Good luck,

Fred

Thanks, I will stick to new equipment. Is the Lelit worth the extra money, and will the grinder still be suitable if I end up upgrading in say 2 years? I was planning on getting the Gaggia Classic with the Baratza Precisco after I played around with my moka pot some more I just saw that price on CL and thought well this is too good of a deal to pass up so I was jumping the gun a little.

I bought used never having pulled a shot in my life.  But I researched and thought about it a lot.  Settled on a machine that could be had pretty cheaply on the used market with lots of power for steaming.  Then I waited for that machine to come up at my price.

I personally think unless you are handy or have someone close to you that is, I would pass on used machines till I had more of an idea of what I wanted and why. Used machines can be a lot of work and if you are frustrated with the moka pot you will be more frustrated with a borked machine.

That said, if it is not rusty and crusty on the inside and heats it is probably not a bad deal at 200$ since they sell new for 400.  I probably would not pay 250.

Buying advice: GRINDER GRINDER GRINDER. Don't cheap out on the grinder.

I don't think it's a bad price and I much prefer being a handyman. I got a used Gaggia Classic for $200 and I don't feel as bad opening it up and modding it as I would if I paid the ~$400 new price.
