A long time ago, our house was burned to a crisp though it wasn't due to coffee machines left overnight. But I don't want to risk anything. I have a timer set to start heating at 5 am, then the machine will be on until 10 pm (or as long as I'm in the house to monitor it).
I also make it a habit to clean it before retiring for the night so I'm sure the coffee always taste good and the machine will last. It's 5 years old already.

Did you know...? Dark roast coffees actually have less caffeine than lighter roasts due to the fact that the process of roasting burns off caffeine.

I would get a timer for sure.  Having it off for the sleeping/away hours will make it last that much longer, and save you a few bucks on energy.
