Hi all, I finally decided on a machine to get. Last week I was rationalizing my way up the QM ladder and then found myself looking at the S1 Dream. I was also looking into the Londinium closely but I'm not sure a lever is for me although that is a beauty for sure.
So that leads me to the Cimbali Junior and the Elektra T1. I wanted a tank and they both have common replacement parts so they were even there. I picked the Elektra. I just couldn't say no to the group head. :)
I know the Vario is supposed to be an excellent grinder, but would I be better served by something else?

If you're looking to visually keep your machine the centerpiece, then the Vario, or Vario-W is the way to go. The grind is excellent, CS is great, no waste or mess, and they take up little space. The Vario grinds by timer, and allows you to grind directly into the PF/basket if you choose. The Vario is a weight based grinder (accurate to +/- .2 grams), but the grind goes to the grinds bin, and then you dump the grind carefully into your basket. Some use a little funnel made for that purpose. (Orphan Espresso sells them). That's how I use my "W." Takes 5-10 seconds longer to do it that way. They both grind equally well\, and have the same calibration and adjustment system.
There are, of course the big, shop/commercial grinders, starting with the Mazzer SJ. ($700). As a former owner of 2, I compare the grind very much to the Vario. Both bring out a bit more of the chocolates and such, while the $1k (and above) conicals tend to accentuate the brighter components of your coffee.
